Insights on the American Racing Scene for Aug. 13

2nd-SAR, $83K, Msw, 2yo, 1 1/16mT, 1:33 p.m. EDT
FORMULA ONE (Smart Strike), the $1.7-million sale topper at OBS March off a sparkling :9 4/5 breeze, makes his debut here for Lane's End Racing and generally patient conditioner Shug McGaughey. His dam Glamorista (Unbridled's Song) was a 6 1/4-length debut winner in July of her sophomore season sprinting over the Hollywood park synthetic, and was third in the GII A Gleam H. over that same surface a year later. Glamorista is a half-sister to MGISW Critical Eye (Dynaformer), as well as the dam of this year's GII Dixie S. winner Takeover Target (Harlan's Holiday). Woodford Racing went to $850,000 to secure Ticonderoga (Tapit) at Keeneland September. The Chad Brown trainee is out of MGSW turf millionaire Keertana (Johar), herself a half to MGSW/GISP Snow Top Mountain (Najran); GSW/GISP 'TDN Rising Star' Diversy Harbor (Curlin); and Wednesday's impressive local graduate Private Client (Kitten's Joy). 7th-DMR, $63K, Msw, 2yo, 5 1/2f, 8:03 p.m. EDT
BIG GRAY ROCKET (Tapit), who most recently fired a four-furlong local co-bullet in :46.80 (1/26) Aug. 9, gets his career underway here for Frank Fletcher Racing Operations and Hall of Famer Bob Baffert. The $450,000 KEESEP yearling is out of Mistical Plan (Game Plan), a debut winner, stakes-winner and graded stakes-placed juvenile who won the GII Fair Grounds Oaks at three before cutting back at four to romp in the GI Princess Rooney H. Budokan (Hard Spun) perhaps slipped through the cracks a bit as a $75,000 Keeneland September acquisition. His dam is Grade I-winning grasser Vacare (Lear Fan). TJCIS PPs
