The approval of Lord Derby's plans to develop Hatchfield Farm in Newmarket, building 400 houses on the site, has been overturned by the government, according to Racing Post. The controversial plans were approved in July 2014, but were soon put on hold by then Department For Communities and Local Government Minister Eric Pickles.
The DCLG's decision notice read, “The Secretary of State disagrees with the inspector's recommendation. He hereby refuses outline planning permission for up to 400 dwellings plus associated open space (including areas of habitat enhancement) foul and surface water infrastructure, two accesses onto the A142, internal footpaths, cycle routes and estate roads at Hatchfield Farm.”
Another factor in the decision is the impending 2020 closure of the nearby RAF Mildenhall airbase, which will make housing space available.
