Inspector Lynley, a maiden winner over the Gulfstream lawn in February, was third in the Apr. 8 GIII Transylvania S. in his first start against winners. A troubled sixth in a May 12 optional claimer at Belmont and second in a similar affair in Elmont June 3, the bay colt was coming off a closing third-place effort behind American Patriot (War Front) in the July 16 GIII Kent S. at Delaware.
Inspector Lynley found a good spot in fourth along the rail, two to three lengths off leader Ray's the Bar (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}), who led through moderate splits of :23.87 and :48.46. Boxed in at the hedge approaching the eighth pole, Inspector Lynley tipped out soon after and closed stoutly on the far outside in the final sixteenth to run down favored Camelot Kitten under a perfectly timed ride by Joel Rosario.
“He broke beautifully out of the gate,” Rosario said. “There wasn't a lot of speed and I thought that I could hold my spot. He was very game and not too far from the pace, and I thought the race would not be that fast and he is looking at stronger horses now. He is now putting it all together.”
Winning trainer Shug McGaughey added, “I'm very pleased, this horse was coming into the race really well and trained really well. He had some excuses his last three starts. Last start, he was wide in the Kent and the horse who beat him came back and ran well in the [GI] Secretariat, so I thought that legitimized that race.”
Pedigree Notes:
Inspector Lynley is out of multiple graded stakes winner Criminologist, who is a half-sister to the dam of graded stakes winner Tammy the Torpedo (More Than Ready) and to multiple graded stakes placed Rescue Squad (Dynaformer). His third dam Deputation produced the dam of Grade I winner Carriage Trail (Giant's Causeway). Criminologist produced a filly by Tiznow this year and was bred back to Lemon Drop Kid.
