Iquitos first emerged on the major domestic scene when runner-up to the G1 Deutsches Derby second Palace Prince (Ger) (Areion {Ger}) in the 10-furlong G3 Grosser Preis der Sparkasse Krefeld last August, but was not seen until fourth in the Listed Preis von Dahlwitz over that trip at Hoppegarten Apr. 24. Moving on to capture the G2 Grosser Preis der Badischen Wirtschaft over 11 furlongs here May 29, the bay was no match for Protectionist (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) when second in Hamburg's G2 Grosser Hansa-Preis at this trip July 3 before finishing fourth in Munich's G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis back at a mile and a quarter at the end of July. Held up in last in customary style by Ian Ferguson, he was coaxed into the shake-up by the top of the straight as Nightflower was committed in front by Andrasch Starke. Overwhelming that rival with a furlong remaining, he was out in the clear soon after to register a career-best in a renewal that lacked its usual strength. Iquitos was becoming the second group 1 winner for Adlerflug and the second pattern-race scorer for him on the day after his 3-year-old son Moonshiner (Ger) landed the G3 Prix de Lutece at Saint-Cloud. His dam Irika has a 2-year-old colt by Soldier Hollow (GB) named Imperator (Fr) after her G3 Zukunfts-Rennen-winning distant relative, and also a yearling filly by Kamsin (Ger).
