Myboycharlie's Landfall In Champions Juvenile Upset

Landfall | Racing Post

Having beaten the subsequent winner Exemplar (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in a seven-furlong maiden on debut at The Curragh Aug. 21, Landfall put another Ballydoyle blueblood to the sword here as TDN Rising Star Douglas Macarthur managed only third as the hot favourite. Tracking that front-running rival throughout the early stages, the bay took over with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and stayed on strongly to assert for an authoritative verdict over Firey Speech, who denied Douglas Macarthur the runner's-up spot as the major stables went away empty-handed. “I said during the week that I hadn't ridden a two-year-old that went as well since Casamento and Pathfork and he's improved since the Curragh,” jockey Shane Foley said. “He's a big raw horse and we loved him going there, but what he's done since then is the sign of a good horse. He's still green and pricked his ears in front and ran around a bit. He has a great temperament and does everything very well. Myboycharlie was very speedy, but he seems to relax and a truly-run mile will be ideal for him.” Trainer Ken Condon added, “It's rare that a horse who promises so much in the morning can show their true mettle in the afternoon where it really matters, but he's a horse who has transferred it. He had a lovely first start and his two bits of work in the meantime were steps forward, so he was coming here in good shape. We considered waiting for the [G2] Beresford [S. at The Curragh Sept. 25], but when the horse is as well as he was we had to let him take his chance. What was particularly encouraging for his future was the way that in the last 100 yards he switched leads and surged again to the line. That's the hallmark of a good one and I hope he can make into a group one horse.”

Landfall is out of an unraced daughter of the GI E.P. Taylor S. heroine Volga, who also captured the GII La Prevoyante H., GIII Matchmaker H. and G3 Prix de Royaumont. The third dam Verveine was a European highweight who took the G2 Prix de l'Opera and G3 Prix du Calvados and finished third in the G1 Prix de Diane, G1 Prix Marcel Boussac and G1 Prix Saint-Alary. Alongside Volga, her black-type winners also include the G1 Hong Kong Vase heroine Vallee Enchantee (Ire) (Peintre Celebre), while she is a half to the G2 Prix du Muguet winner Vetheuil (Riverman) and the dams of the G1 Grand Prix de Paris and G1 Prix Jean Prat-winning sire Vespone (Ire), the G1 Melbourne Cup and G1 Hong Kong Vase runner-up Purple Moon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and G1 Coronation S. winner Maids Causeway (Ire) (Giant's Causeway). Vanishing Prairie is also the second dam of this year's G2 Duke of Cambridge S. and G3 Dahlia S. winner Usherette (Ire) (Shamardal).
