Squeezed a bit at the break, Covey Trace was unhurried early, running in fifth off opening splits of :23.22 and :47.18. Advancing three wide on the backstretch to be second as they hit the far turn, the chestnut wore down the pacesetter in the lane and held off a late run for Sophia's Song to score her first graded success.
Graduating at third asking springing at Ellis Park last August, Covey Trace checked in third when switched to the sod at Kentucky Downs a month later and was off the board in her next two starts on dirt, including the Rags to Riches S. at Churchill last November. Kicking off this term with an allowance third in a turf sprint in Louisville June 3, she won a six-panel optional claimer on the main track there June 18 and was a non-factor eighth in the grassy TaWee S. at Indiana July 20. The sophomore was last seen scoring a decisive 5 1/4-length victory over the Ellis main track Aug. 14.

The winner is the fourth foal out of the Yankee Victor mare Anniversary. She has a 2-year-old half-sister named Silver Four (Majesticperfection); a yearling half-brother by Istan and a weanling half-sister by Divine Park. Anniversary was not bred back this year.
