Angel Of The North

Mecca's Angel | Racing Post

Mecca's Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), who hails from one of England's most northerly based operations, wowed the Yorkshire crowd when romping to a second G1 Nunthorpe S. title in August and will be a warm order to repeat the dose for County Durham trainer Michael Dods in Sunday's G1 Prix de l'Abbaye at Chantilly. Making just a second visit across the English Channel, she remains at the top of her game facing a plethora of old foes in this five-furlong dash, including G1 King's Stand S. hero Profitable (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who defeated her by a neck in May's G2 Temple S. at Haydock. He lines up off a fourth to Limato (Ire) (Tagula {Ire}) in Newmarket's G1 July Cup and a sixth in the Nunthorpe last time. Previous winners Goldream (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and Maarek (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) take aim once more, but both are winless this term. Just Glamorous (Ire) (Arcano {Ire}) left Marsha (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), Goldream and others trailing in his wake when lowering the track standard in last month's G3 Prix du Petit Couvert over course and distance, and an eyeballs-out run style is aided by an inside gate here. Further spice is provided by Listed Windsor Castle S. and G2 Flying Childers S. victor Ardad (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), who bids to become the first juvenile winner of the contest since Sigy (Fr) (Habitat) in 1978. Finsbury Square (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) is one of just three domestic nominees and will bid to improve France's measly tally of four from 37 returning off a win in August's G3 Prix de Meautry at Deauville.
