Tapit's Golden Hawk Soars in Grey S.

Golden Hawk | WEG/Michael Burns

Golden Hawk delivered as the heavy favorite in the Sunday feature at Woodbine, taking control after a quarter-mile and never looking back in a much-the-best 5 1/4-length romp. The chestnut came into the race off a gritty victory on debut going seven furlongs over the local turf Sept. 4.

Tabbed as the odds-on choice for this first try around two

turns, Golden Hawk sparred for command from the outside through a quarter-mile in :24.51 and stepped out to establish a firm advantage down the backstretch. Well within himself through a half in :48.60, the homebred allowed his pursuers to inch closer coming off the far turn, but just as quickly shut the door and spurted clear with a superior turn of foot in the lane.

“With a small field, you don't want to get trapped on the first turn,” said Husbands. “So I just let him run away from there, and he just pricked his ears. I had everything my way.”

Golden Hawk gave Canadian Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse his fourth overall win in the Grey, and his first since Prospective (Malibu Moon) in 2011.

Pedigree Notes:

Gone Purrfect, a full-sister to champion sprinter and prominent sire Speightstown out of 1995 Canadian champion juvenile filly Silken Cat (Storm Cat), foaled Golden Hawk in 2014 and was sold in foal to Medaglia d'Oro for $250,000 to SF Bloodstock at that year's Keeneland November Sale. She produced the Medaglia d'Oro colt in 2015, a colt by Super Saver earlier this year and was most recently bred back to Pioneerof the Nile.
