Southern Ring, a maiden winner over the Woodbine turf last September, concluded her three-race sophomore campaign with a win over the all-weather in the Oct. 17 Ruling Angel S. She resurfaced with a front-running optional claiming victory over the turf May 20 and suffered the first off-the-board finish of her career when tiring to fourth after setting the pace in the July 1 Zadracarta S. Southern Ring was away well, but let the speed go and settled into a stalking third behind quick fractions of :22.14 and :44.47. She reeled in the pacesetter and skipped clear with a furlong to run before holding off late-closing favorite Cactus Kris to the wire.
“She's been a special filly all along,” said winning trainer Malcolm Pierce. “We were really aiming at the Royal North [a turf stakes race] with her a month or so ago and she got a little injury in the stall. It was nothing, but we just couldn't run on that day. She trained into this race perfectly and she showed up today.”
Pedigree Notes:
Multiple stakes winner Seeking the Ring (Seeking the Gold)'s last reported foal is a 3-year-old by Scat Daddy filly named Run to the Beat. A daughter of multiple graded stakes placed Radiant Ring (Halo), the 16-year-old mare is a full-sister to Canadian champion 3-year-old filly Catch the Ring, who is the dam of Canadian champion 2-year-old filly Catch the Thrill (A.P. Indy).
