Another Euro horse with designs on the G1 Emirates S., is Godolphin's 4-year-old Scottish (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}). The Charlie Appleby-trained gelding ran a fine race to be second to Jameka (Aus) (Myboycharlie {Ire}) in the G1 Caulfield Cup on Saturday and although he has taken the exertions well, connections are torn between upping him in trip for the G1 Emirates Melbourne Cup or sticking to races over 10 furlongs.
“He has definitely had a tough race, he ran well and has come out great,” Appleby's assistant trainer James Ferguson told Racing.com. “He is still in the Melbourne Cup but Kerrin McEvoy had a slight question whether he stays or not and whether 10 furlongs might be the key with him, as it is back home.”
Ferguson continued, “The Emirates S. is looking more likely than the Melbourne Cup, but he is still in the Melbourne Cup and he is one of ours that is definitely already in, so we will have to have a long think and speak to the team back home.”
Meanwhile Jameka has been handed a 1.5kg Melbourne Cup penalty for her win at Caulfield last Saturday, which brings her Cup weight to 53.5kg, 3kg below the top weighted Preferment (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}).
