GUIGNOL WIRES THE GROSSER PREIS VON BAYERN
Third in August's G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin and sixth in Milan's G1 Gran Premio del Jockey Club last month, Guignol (Ger) (Cape Cross {Ire}) lit up the boards with a shock win in Tuesday's G1 Grosser Preis von Bayern at Munich. Sent straight to the front and afforded a clear advantage throughout, the 65-2 outsider had all his rivals in trouble turning for home and tightened the screw further under urging inside the final quarter mile to claim a career high by 1 3/4 lengths from Racing History (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), who got the better of fellow Godolphin colourbearer Hawkbill (Kitten's Joy) by a nose in a bobbing finish for second. “I was fortunate that the other riders thought I was acting as pacemaker for [stablemate] Savoir Vivre and didn't take me on,” admitted rider Michael Cadeddu after registering a first win at the highest level. “He responded when I asked him, but I wondered where the rest of the field was with 300 metres to go. I am very happy and am very grateful for the ride.”
Guignol was untried as a juvenile and raced just twice last year, prevailing in his Cologne debut and running fifth in Longchamp's Listed Prix de l'Avre, and opened this term with a conditions win at Krefeld Mar. 20. Third in Berlin's Listed Preis von Dahlwitz the following month, he ran fourth in the June 5 G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly before hitting the board in Hamburg's July 3 G2 Grosser Hansa-Preis and the Aug. 14 G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin, and was a last-out sixth in the Oct. 16 G1 Gran Premio del Jockey Club at Milan's San Siro. He surpassed all prior efforts with a first stakes score in Europe's penultimate Group 1 contest of the year here as G1 Deutsches Derby runner-up Savoir Vivre (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger}) faded in the closing stages after tracking his stablemate in second. “Racing History and Hawkbill have both run creditably,” commented Godolphin's Hugh Anderson after the pair closed late to reduce the winner's margin of superiority. “The ground was pretty testing and sticky, which made it difficult, and Guignol gave them a lot to do in the straight. Ioritz Mendizabal and William Buick were happy with the performances and both horses should be good to continue racing next year.”
Guignol is the second Group 1 scorer out of G1 Oaks d'Italia victress Guadalupe (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), and the 11th bred from a mare by Monsun (Ger), the last-but-one being Sunday's G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud hero and 'TDN Rising Star' Waldgeist (GB) (Galileo {Ire}). Guadalupe is also the dam of G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis hero Guiliani (Ire) (Tertullian), the stakes-placed Gauguin (Ger) (Tertullian) and Listed Oster Stutenpreis and Listed Hanshin Cup victrix Guantana (Ger) (Dynaformer), who in turn produced MGSW G2 Gerling-Preis victor Guardini (Fr) (Dalakahni {Ire}) and this term's Listed Hoppegartener Stutenpreis winner Gouache (Ger) (Shamardal). The next dam is the Unfuwain mare Guernica (GB), who also had the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden and G1 Deutschland-Preis hero Getaway (Ger) (Monsun (Ger), and is herself kin to dual G1 Ascot Gold Cup victor Royal Rebel (GB) (Robellino {GB}). Guadalupe has also produced a yearling filly by Lawman (Fr) and a filly foal by Australia (GB).
