Away in good order, he stalked the pace from the outside through a quarter-mile in :21.87 and was left with significant work to do as Lenstar (Shackleford) stepped on the gas and widened to open up an eight-length lead passing the half-mile marker. The gray was asked to reel that one in on the turn–and it still looked like an impossible task turning for home–but Lenstar grew leg weary in midstretch, and Petrov forged past to win going away by 3 1/4 lengths.
