Winner two back of the GIII Commonwealth Oaks at Laurel Park, My Impression called upon her class in the final 100 yards and outfinished the rail-rallying Sassy Little Lila to win the inaugural running of the Winter Memories S. Friday at Aqueduct.
Most recently third in Keeneland's GIII Pin Oak Valley View S. Oct. 21, the bay was away a half-step slowly as the race favorite and sat sixth along the rail, five lengths adrift of a :24.03 quarter and :48.96 half. Patiently ridden while saving ground on the far turn, the homebred was sent to the four path approaching the furlong pole and finished full of run to outkick Sassy Little Lila in a blanket finish. My Impression is out of a half-sister to the fleet Sky Blue Pink (Strawberry Road {Aus}), whose half-sister Freddie Frisson (Dixieland Band) is the dam of MGISW and Claiborne Farm stallion First Samurai (Giant's Causeway).
“She got a very good trip,” said Robbie Medina, assistant to winning trainer Shug McGaughey. “Last time when she ran at Keeneland, she was kind of a little keen. We wanted Jose [Ortiz] to get her a little bit back. We've been working with her in the mornings getting her behind horses, just to teach her to relax and give her a little help because sometimes she can be her own worst enemy. She's had a really great year and [I'm] looking forward to seeing her run as a 4-year-old.”
Ortiz added: “She's a filly that would rather cover up. When she gets out, she explodes. Today, I was able to cover up. I had a perfect trip and saved ground and she went without too much difficulty. She gave me a great run.”
