Farrell was ridden with purpose to get the lead from the 11 post and made every pole a winning one in a frontrunning rout of the GII Golden Rod S. at Churchill Downs.
Fourth as the favorite in her debut in the local mud Sept. 17, the homebred came back two weeks later with an open-lengths graduation under the Twin Spires. Stepping up into the Rags to Riches S. here Oct. 30, she ran sneaky well, contesting a fast pace and just fading late to finish third. Given a 10-1 chance here, Farrell broke sharply and was decisively handled by Channing Hill to cross over and get a clear lead going into the clubhouse turn. Comfortably showing the way through fractions of :23.89 and :48.33, the dark bay entered the far bend with ears pricked and set sail for home two lengths to the good without being seriously asked. Spurting further away once set down by Hill, Farrell slammed the door in the final furlong to romp by a half-dozen lengths. Race favorite Daddys Lil Darling won a photo for the place.
“The biggest thing was that she settled into the turn and on the backside and from there, it was going to be tough to catch her,” commented Hill. “She's got a lot of quality to her.”
Winning trainer Wayne Catalano added: “The Rags to Riches was the stepping stone to here and she ran well, but we really, really loved her going into today's race. She trained great, got the race over the track. Everything was beautiful. She'll probably go to Fair Grounds for the winter.”
Pedigree Notes:
The victress is out of a highly productive SW/GSP dam whose prize progeny is GI Toyota Blue Grass S. and GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity hero Carpe Diem. Her sophomore Semper Fortis was second in this term's GII Los Alamitos Derby as well as last week's Zia Park Derby. J. B.'s Thunder captured the GI Dixiana Breeders' Futurity and Doncaster Rover was a hard-knocking graded stakes performer in England. Rebridled Dreams's yearling colt by Speightstown hammered down for $675,000 at Keeneland September and she produced a filly by Giant's Causeway this term. Second dam Key Cents was a MSW and has a stake named for her which was run Friday at Aqueduct.
