'TDN Rising Star' Cathryn Sophia (Street Boss–Sheave, by Mineshaft), the reigning GI Kentucky Oaks winner who was purchased by SF Bloodstock for $1.4 million at the Fasig-Tipton November sale, will be retired from the race and is booked to WinStar Farm's Pioneerof the Nile for her first year at stud in 2017, according to a tweet from SF associate Tom Ryan.
A $30,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic yearling purchase by Chuck Zacney's Cash Is King LLC and turned over to trainer John Servis, Cathryn Sophia graduated by 12 3/4 lengths at first asking and earned the 'Rising Star' designation after crushing her rivals by 16 1/4 lengths in the Gin Talking S. in her next start. Increasingly able to harness her speed as she moved into her 3-year-old season, she added the seven-furlong GII Forward Gal S. and the GII Davona Dale S. at a flat mile, but had her winning streak snapped when a game third in the GI Ashland S. at Keeneland. The convincing 2 3/4-length winner of the Oaks, Cathryn Sophia was third to 'Rising Star' Carina Mia (Malibu Moon) in the GI Acorn S. and to champion and 'Rising Star' Songbird (Medaglia d'Oro) in the GI Cotillion S. around an open-lengths victory in the Princess of Sylmar S.
Cathryn Sophia was bred in Maryland by Robert T. Manfuso, who raced the filly's second dam, Belterra (Unbridled), to a victory in the 2001 GII Golden Rod S. and a third-place effort in the 2002 GI Ashland S. Belterra is the dam of SW Taketheodds (Street Sense) and the granddam of MSP Bullheaded Boy (Bullsbay). Third dam Cruising Haven produced the good Midlantic sprinter Royal Haven (Hail Emperor). Cathryn Sophia heads to the breeding shed with a record of 9-6-0-3 and earnings of $1,229,720.
