Straight as an 'Arrow' in Springboard

Into Mischief | Lee Thomas

Brad and Misty Grady's Cool Arrow (Into Mischief) was allowed to set leisurely fractions before kicking clear with authority to take the $300,000 Springboard Mile by

3 1/2 lengths at Remington Park Sunday. The 8-5 favorite broke alertly from the outside post in the field of 12 and was guided to the rail by Luis Saez. Loping along unchallenged through fractions of :24.68, :49.79 and 1:14.54, he scampered clear in upper stretch and came home an easy winner, completing the one mile in 1:38.72. Totality (Tapit) closed for second, just a head in front of U S Officer (U S Ranger) in third.

“He had the lead and he was very comfortable,” commented Saez. “When he came into the stretch, he just took off.”

Cool Arrow, who graduated by a front-running 5 1/2 lengths versus $40,000 maiden claimers at Laurel July 15, captured the Kip Deville S. going six furlongs at Remington Sept. 25. He was second behind Warrior's Club (Warrior's Reward) in the Oct. 30 Spendthrift Stallion S. at Churchill Downs last time out.

“The Kip Deville was the first step in the right direction for him,” said winning trainer Joe Sharp. “The patience from Brad and the crew has paid off. And we're grateful to Luis for getting him there. He did a great job getting a good position early and making the best of a bad post position, but good horses overcome that stuff.”

Grady admitted, “We were concerned about the 12 post, but we think he was the best horse and he handled it well.”

Grady's Grand Oaks purchased Cool Arrow for $120,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale. He is a half-brother to stakes winner Phoenician Moon (Malibu Moon). Phoenicia produced an Itsmyluckyday half-sister to the winner this year and was bred back to Bodemeister. The mare also has a yearling colt by Street Sense. From the Remington Park winner's circle, breeder Allen Poindexter said the yearling is currently at Grady's farm in Florida, adding, “We'll see what we'll do with him.”

The Springboard Mile has been a productive race in recent years, with last year's runner-up Suddenbreakingnews (Mineshaft) going on to be second in the GI Arkansas Derby and fifth in the GI Kentucky Derby. Will Take Charge (Unbridled's Song) was second in 2012 before being named champion 3-year-old colt the following season.
