Grade I-winning millionaire and sire Heatseeker (Ire) (Giant's Causeway–Rusty Back, by Defensive Play) was euthanized Dec. 27 at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the University of California, Davis after suffering injuries in a paddock accident at Harris Farms. A Group 1-placed juvenile in Ireland, the chestnut annexed the 2008 GI Santa Anita H. and GII Californian S. en route to career earnings of $1,177,776 for owner William Deburgh. He originally retired to Kentucky for stud duties in 2009, but was moved to Harris Farms in 2012. The 14-year-old is responsible for the likes of Peruvian champion Ryan's Charm and GSW Speed Seeker, and has progeny earnings approaching $6 million.
