A yearling colt by last year's leading freshman sire Dialed In topped Sunday's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Winter Mixed Sale in Timonium when selling for $70,000 to Machmer Hall, while overall numbers for the one-day auction, being held for the second time in January, were down from a year ago.
With an additional 69 catalogued in 2017, 139 head sold for $901,900. The average fell 23.2% to $6,488 and the median dipped 19.5% to $3,500. The buy-back rate, a sparkling 13.3% in 2016, was 30.2% Sunday. Last year, 104 horses grossed $878,100 for an average of $8,443 and a median of $4,350.
Consigned by Bill Reightler, agent, the sale-topping hip 174 is out of Her Lady Grace (Lord Carson), a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Halory Leigh (Halory Hunter). The chestnut colt was bred by Donald L Brown, Jr. in Pennsylvania.
Machmer Hall also purchased last year's Midlantic Winter topper, going to $76,000 for a son of Curlin. The farm resold that yearling for $180,000 at the Keeneland September sale last fall.
