Historic Salisbury a Nursery of Champions

Most British racecourses now hold considerably more race-days than used to be the case. Salisbury, the second-oldest course in the country after Chester, is no exception. The curiosity of its calendar is that its year nowadays starts later than formerly, with its curtain-raiser now established as taking place on the Sunday afternoon on which the 1,000 Guineas is run at Newmarket. This means that there can no longer be Guineas contenders limbering up at Salisbury before heading to Newmarket, unlike in 1979 when Salisbury held one of its best-remembered race-days...

Samangan
'Not 100%' Samangan Forced to Miss 2,000 Guineas

The Aga Khan Studs homebred Samangan (Blue Point), last seen filling the runner-up spot in the G3 Prix Djebel, has been ruled out of Saturday's Betfred 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket. Trained by Francis-Henri Graffard, Samangan was beaten just once in four starts as a two-year-old, notably winning the G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte at Chantilly on his final outing. Hopes had been high of a big run at Newmarket following an encouraging return to action at Deauville, but his absence now means that the first British Classic of the season will...

"Speciosa in front as they race inside the final furlong, chased by Nasheej and Confidential Lady. Speciosa, for a special result in the 1,000 Guineas. Speciosa wins...for Pam Sly!" Even two decades on, the replay from that memorable Newmarket afternoon cannot fail to stir the emotions, the sight of Sly's pride and joy surging towards the winning post and the sheer incredulity in the voice of Channel 4 Racing's lead commentator, Simon Holt, as the impossible became possible right before his very eyes. This was the 1,000 Guineas, after all....

Marcstown's Saxon Street On Top In The Blue Riband Trial

Saxon Street's sire Saxon Warrior failed to handle Epsom's unique terrain when losing out in the 2018 Derby, but it proved no problem for him as he gained an automatic entry to the main event in Tuesday's Listed Blue Riband Trial Stakes. Seen only once last term when belying greenness to win over a mile at Chelmsford just before Christmas, Marcstown's €170,000 Goffs Orby Book 1 purchase from the family of Shraaoh (Sea The Stars) was happy to track the leaders early under William Buick. Tackling Ballydoyle's ultimately disappointing 4-5...

Zarak's Prix Du Jockey Club Entry Dolmalan Excels At Chantilly

The Aga Khan Studs are replete with top-class middle-distance runners at present and Tuesday's Listed Prix de Suresnes could have played host to another as Dolmalan (Zarak) showed an impressive late surge to extend his unbeaten sequence. "He's still a little immature, but it was pleasing that he was able to accelerate like that," trainer Mikel Delzangles said. "If he was a good horse, he was going to be able to make up a few lengths and he did. The Prix du Jockey Club is a strong possibility." Coming off...
