We Must Dream

About two-and-a-half hours after American Pharoah won the 2015 Kentucky Derby, a mare we own in partnership lay down and foaled a colt.  Another dream began.  It is a scene repeated every night in foaling barns during breeding season.  On wobbly, spindly legs they stand for the first time.  As they do, breeders dream.  Ahmed Zayat and his family had a big dream, of winning the Kentucky Derby. After three seconds in the country's most storied race, they had to wonder if they would stand in the winners' circle on...

Giovanni Canaletto Out Of Chester Vase

Giovanni Canaletto (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a 14-1 shot for the G1 Epsom Derby for trainer Aidan O'Brien and the Coolmore partners, has been ruled out of Thursday's G3 Chester Vase by his conditioner after returning a dirty scope Monday.  "Unfortunately, Giovanni Canaletto didn't scope clean this morning and won't be traveling to Chester,” O'Brien told Racing Post. "It's a bad time to have such a hold-up, so we'll have to wait and see. We have other entries in the Vase and will probably run one or two."  Giovanni Canaletto has started...

Tiggy Wiggy To Return To Sprinting

Last year's Cartier champion 2-year-old filly Tiggy Wiggy (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), a brave third in the G1 1000 Guineas Sunday after carving out the pace, is set for a return to sprinting.  "I was very proud of Tiggy Wiggy,” said trainer Richard Hannon. “We were dipping our toes into unknown territory and she came home with her head held high. You can't say that she didn't stay the mile, but it was only her class that kept her going. We need to make full use of her electric early speed, so it's...

Tapit Colt To Lingfield Derby Trial

Michael Tabor and Rachel Hood's Christophermarlowe (Tapit), the unbeaten winner of the Investec Derby Trial at Epsom Apr. 22, is among the 14 entries for Saturday's Listed Derby Trial S. at Lingfield.  "Christophermarlowe goes to Lingfield on Saturday for the Derby Trial," said trainer John Gosden. "We've put him in the [G3] Chester Vase [May 7] as well, but he'd only run there if it was a monsoon at Lingfield."  Christophermarlowe, who is a general 16-1 for the G1 Epsom Derby, could face up to five from Ballydoyle, including the stakes-placed winner Order...

Zawraq Could Bypass Derby Trial

The Dermot Weld-trained, Sheikh Hamdan-owned Zawraq (Ire) (Shamardal), a general 10-1 for the G1 Epsom Derby on the back of an eye-catching score in the Listed 2000 Guineas Trial S. at Leopardstown Apr. 12, could skip Sunday's G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial if the ground is too soft, Weld told At the Races. Zawraq's regular rider, Pat Smullen, will also be serving a suspension this weekend, and that could also affect the decision.  "We will make a decision during the week about Zawraq,” Weld said. “We will see what the weather does...

International Investment At Inglis

The focus of the Inglis Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale turned to select broodmares for its second session Monday, and like the Easter yearling sales at the Newmarket complex in Sydney last month, there was a decidedly international flavor to proceedings, with the top two lots going to Chinese investor Yu Long Investments.  The session saw strength at the top of the market, but figures were down across the board. A total of 136 horses changed hands for A$6,527,100 for a buyback rate of 24.4%, up 9% from 12 months...

International Cast On Hand For Easter

By Kelsey Riley  The driving rain that forced the postponement of opening day of The Championships seemed a distant memory in Sydney Sunday as an international cross-section of buyers inspected the 605 yearlings on offer for the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale under bright and sunny skies. Shoppers from all corners of the globe have descended on the Newmarket paddocks, and Inglis bloodstock director Jonathan D'Arcy said the crowds have been strong since showing began last Wednesday.  “All week we've had good numbers here,” D'Arcy said. “Talking to the studs,...

Baffert and Pletcher Own the Day. So What Else Is New?

by Bill Finley Yes, anything is possible, particularly when it comes to a 20-horse rodeo where form sometimes goes out the window. But can you really see someone other than Todd Pletcher or Bob Baffert winning the Kentucky Derby?  Whatever chance those not named Todd or Bob had of winning the Derby diminished significantly yesterday as the two big guns from the sport's two most prominent stables performed magnificently.  Carpe Diem (Giant's Causeway) always did look like Pletcher's best hope for winning the Kentucky Derby and he looks even better now...

Retired NY Trainer Robert Lake Passes Away

Retired trainer Robert Lake, a stalwart in New York for four decades, died Wednesday at the age of 82 at Saratoga Hospital.  Lake settled in Saratoga Springs in 1999 after a 49-year career that began July 7, 1950, when the 17-year-old won with the first horse he saddled, Big Fly, at Pleasanton, CA. He was born Aug. 18, 1932 in San Francisco. His introduction to racing came as 7-year-old selling newspapers at the old Tanofran Racetrack. After gaining experience as a trainer in his home state, Lake moved to Chicago...
