Newsells Park Introduces 'No Risk Terms' for Two Stallions in 2026

Newsells Park Stud has announced 'No Risk Terms' in 2026 for two of its young stallions, A'Ali and Isaac Shelby, with breeders only paying the nomination fee for each sire when their resulting foal is sold at public auction. In the event that the sale price achieved is less than twice the nomination fee, the proceeds will be shared 50/50 between the breeder and Newsells Park Stud, meaning the fee payable may be less than the full nomination fee. Should the sale proceeds exceed twice the nomination fee, the mare...

Starman Blowing Our Minds with Sequence of Group-Winning Juveniles

When it comes to the 2025 crop of first-season sires in Europe, there's one stallion who is now operating in truly rarefied air, fittingly so for a horse going by the name of Starman. With 16 individual winners on the board in Europe, the son of Dutch Art is currently six clear of Nando Parrado and eight clear of A'Ali, with Palace Pier, Space Blues and Supremacy then locked in a three-way tie for fourth with seven winners apiece. Lucky Vega has six, while Ubettabelieveit and Victor Ludorum each have...

They Could be Heroes, But Starman Favourite to be Leading First-Season Sire

It's too soon, isn't it, to be thinking about this year's first-season sires? Well, not according to bookmaker Paddy Power, which has already released a market on this year's championship for Britain and Ireland, installing Starman (GB) as odds-on favourite to take the crown. There are a number of good reasons to imagine that this might be the case. For a start, the Group 1-winning sprinter stands at Tally-Ho Stud, which enjoys loyal support from many commercial breeders as well as backing their own stallions to the hilt. In recent...

History Made at Tattersalls But Harsh Reality of Lower Market Tier is Evident

NEWMARKET, UK -- In contrast to the opening day of foal trade in Ireland just over a week ago, the Tattersalls December Foal Sale was slower out of the blocks with a clearance rate of 60%. The average and median did improve throughout the day and ended with slight increases on this session last year at 12,086gns (+8%) and 9,000gns (+13%). Turnover, from 111 of the 182 foals sold, dipped by 14% to 1,341,500gns, albeit from 24 fewer foals changing hands than on the corresponding day last year. Of those...

No Longer The 'Mugs In The Middle' – Star Bloodstock To Wind Down Breeze-Up Operation

Star Bloodstock, the consignment that unearthed talents like Malavath (Ire), A'Ali (Ire) and more, is set to wind down its breeze-up operation and concentrate entirely on producing future top-notchers on the racetrack instead.  The shift in focus has reaped immediate rewards with the aptly-named Make Haste (GB) (Blue Point {Ire}), a leading Royal Ascot contender after posting a stunning debut success at Naas for trainer and breeze-up consignor Diego Dias, being snapped up by Gainesway and LNJ Foxwoods.  Bought by Byron Rogers, Star Bloodstock and Dias at the Tattersalls Book...

Stallions Shine in Sunny Start to February Sale

NEWMARKET, UK -- It has become the tradition for the Tattersalls February Sale to be preceded by the TBA Flat Stallion Parade and this year's event contained the added incentive of a potential free entry to next year's December Foal Sale. Breeders who booked a nomination to one of the 10 stallions on the day have been automatically entered into a free draw to win one of five places at the 2025 sale for the resulting offspring.  With nine of the 10 stallions stabled in the Left Yard at Park...

Value Sires Part II: Under 10,000

Having started with the new stallions for 2024, we are continuing the series with those in the lower price tier beneath the fee of 10,000, whether in euros or sterling. For the benefit of this piece we are treating them as one and the same, despite the current exchange rate of £1 = €1.16. This is the territory inhabited by many small breeders, and in plenty of cases the margins between operating at a profit and a loss are very tight indeed.  I am reminded here of a particularly interesting...

Open House for Newmarket Stallions

Super Sunday for bloodstock enthusiasts is fast approaching, with stallion farms in Newmarket set to open their doors for breeders on the quiet day between the end of the foal sale and the start of the mares sale at Tattersalls. In addition to those based in Newmarket, there will be a few visiting stallions in town throughout the week, and the viewing is by no means restricted to Sunday, as the guide below shows. Dullingham Park The brand new stallion yard at Dullingham Park is now home to the dual...

Value Sires Part V: Everything to Prove

For this final part of the series, we are looking at stallions who have retired to stud since 2021 and will thus have either first foals or yearlings at the sales this year or are about to cover their first book of mares. There is plenty to digest from three years' intake and of course prices can often drop after a stallion's first year at stud, so there could be some value to be found for breeders willing to roll the dice on a stallion about to embark on his...
