The Jockey Club of America's Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P.), which encourages the retraining of Thoroughbreds into other disciplines, awarded prizes based on 2025 performances, the organization said via a press release on Wednesday. Beaten Up By The Racing Wars, Immortal Wink Still Found A Second Career Changing Lives

His name is Immortal Wink (Gimmeawink) and after a career that spanned nine years and 142 races, most of them in Puerto Rico, he was done. He was 10 and had suffered through the kind of wear and tear that is typical with horses who run so often, last so long and wind up at the bottom tier of the sport. He would never go on to a second career, at least one that is typical for a retired Thoroughbred. He just wouldn't be able to do it. But there...

Letter to the Editor: Definition – Required

We've gotten ourselves into a pickle--and we're heading for a far bigger one, if the possibility of discussion is taken off the table. The trouble with most altercations and misunderstandings is a lack of knowledge and communication at the onset. What we're currently witnessing between Mike Repole, Louis Masry, Aron Wellman, and the The Jockey Club isn't just an altercation. It's a clash of cultures: the old traditional "club" model that has governed racing, versus the modern, results-driven mindset of 21st-century investors. Historically, the sport has been shaped by a...

Week In Review: It's Time for the Aftercare Debate to Include Passage of the SAFE Act

It is, of course, a good thing, that the subjects of aftercare and slaughter are being so widely debated, with influential owners like Mike Repole and Aron Wellman all but demanding that the industry come together and solve the problem. Just last week, Pat Cummings, who has been working side-by-side with Repole on the issue, penned a letter to the TDN in which he revealed what he called "20 concise findings, with a funding model projection" that he and Repole have put together. Good for Cummings. Good for Repole. Owner...

Letter to the Editor: Good Intentions are No Longer Enough

In 2011, I attended the meeting at Belmont Park that launched the creation of the TAA. I'll never forget how passionate Mike Repole was in that meeting as he paced back and forth leading the conversation that no one wanted to lead. One thing everyone agreed upon was that something needed to be done to fund and monitor aftercare. That was a huge accomplishment and pointed the industry in the right direction for both funding and accreditation. However, the goal was for both funding and infrastructure to grow over time,...

Letter to the Editor: Aftercare–Hope Is Not a Strategy

The recent Thoroughbred Daily News piece by Mike Repole and The Jockey Club's response were both timely and important. Regardless of where one stands on the broader debate, Mr. Repole is plainly correct on this point: the Thoroughbred industry still does not do enough to fund aftercare. For decades we relied on good will, volunteerism, and heroic nonprofit work to clean up the back end of an industry that generates enormous revenue at the front end. That model was not sustainable nor was it morally defensible. In 2011, Jack Wolf...
