BHA British Horseracing Authority
There will be no horseracing across the UK on Wednesday as part of an industry-wide attempt to persuade the British government of the potentially ruinous consequences of a proposed rise in betting tax. A hike from 15 per cent to 21 per cent has been suggested to bring betting on racing and other sports into line with the tax rate for online gaming and slots, but the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), along with the sport's other representative bodies, has warned of the devastating impact on racing's finances if this is...
One of the two major vacancies at the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has been filled with the announcement that Lord Charles Allen will succeed Joe Saumarez Smith as chair from June 1 next year. The search is still on for a chief executive to replace Julie Harrington, who will leave her position at the end of 2024. Appointed from outside racing, Allen is currently chairman and trustee of the Invictus Games Foundation and was chairman of the Manchester Commonwealth Games in 2000-2003, for which he was awarded a CBE. He...
Hollie Doyle, named to ride G1 King's Stand S. scorer Bradsell (GB) (Tasleet {GB}) in the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita Nov. 4, has appealed a seven-day suspension and will have to face the British Horseracing Authority disciplinary panel next week to determine if a trip to America is in the offing. Doyle incurred the ban aboard the Jonathan Portman-trained Rose Light in the 11-furlong Unibet More Boosts In More Races Fillies' H. at Kempton Monday. According to the stewards report, "Doyle was suspended for seven days...
After parting ways with owner John Dance, conditioner James Horton will return to Newmarket to begin training next term on his own. When leading chaser Bravemansgame (Fr) (Brave Mansonnien {Fr})--co-owned by Dance--was barred from running in the Aintree Grand National meeting early this year, the horse was later allowed to continue his career when Bryan Drew took sole ownership. Dance's other horses, most with Horton, were cleared to run, though under different names, in May but with the announcement Monday of "further concerns coming to light", another interim stop had...
A selection of small adjustments have been introduced to the new whip rules, the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) announced on Thursday. There has been ongoing communication between the Professional Jockeys Association (PJA), senior jockeys under both codes and the BHA, and the rule adjustments are the result. "We are very grateful to the PJA and to our jockeys, both for the manner in which they continue to adapt to riding under the new rules, and their constructive engagement with the process which has helped bring about these further improvements," said...
Former jockey Danny Brock has been banned for 15 years by a British Horseracing Authority (BHA) independent disciplinary panel. Brock was found to have breached the rules regarding corruption and fraud and he was subject to a BHA disciplinary hearing in December. Five other individuals--Sean McBride, assistant trainer to his father Philip 'Charlie' McBride, Luke Olley, Eugene Maloney, Andrew Perring and Luke Howells--were collectively found to have profited from Brock's corruption and were also tried at the December disciplinary hearing. The rules breaches were in regard to a trio of...
