Al Pike Passes Away

Veteran horseman Al Pike, who had been battling cancer, passed away Saturday at the age of 70, according to a release from the Texas Thoroughbred Association. Pike, along with his wife of nearly 45 years, Salley, and their son, Colt, operated Pike Racing. Pike is also survived by daughter Chelsey Pike Hooton. Pike got his start in the horse industry in the 1970s as a Quarter Horse trainer in Texas before he and his wife transitioned to Thoroughbreds, eventually focusing on pinhooking. GISW Combatant to Rockridge Stud

Last year's GI Santa Anita H. victor Combatant (Scat Daddy--Border Dispute, by Boundary) has been retired and will stand at Rockridge Stud in Hudson, New York, beginning with the 2022 season. Not This Time Filly Tops OBS Opener

The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's October Sale opened its two-day run Tuesday with an offering of 2-year-olds and selected yearlings and the polarized demand that has come to define the market in recent years accentuated by all the uncertainties of the global pandemic.
