The Week in Review: Is Casino Gaming Finally on its Way to Save Monmouth? It's a Definite Maybe

New Jersey racing has not had it easy, and has not had it easy for a long time. Monmouth was in such dire straits that, after the end of the 2025 meet, there was so little money in its coffers that the track wasn't able to pay horsemen money that was owed to them for months. That problem arose despite the fact Monmouth was receiving an annual $10-million subsidy from the state to supplement purses. Worried that the subsidy, never a sure thing, might go away under the newly elected...

The Thoroughbred Breeders' Association of New Jersey (TBANJ) has announced that it has reached an agreement with Darby Development, the management company that oversees operations at Monmouth Park, that should end what had been a stalemate concerning future racing dates at the seaside track. In a statement released Wednesday, the TBANJ said it was supporting "an amended bill that protects Thoroughbred racing and breeding in New Jersey." With the possibility that a $10-million subsidy that had been used to enhance purses at Monmouth Park might not be available in the...

NJ Breeders Say Bill Would End Racing and Breeding in New Jersey

A vote scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 8 in New Jersey's Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee appears to threaten Thoroughbred racing dates in the state, cutting the required number from 50 to 25. The story was first reported by DRF's Matt Hegarty. Michael Campbell, the executive director for the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association of New Jersey, sent out a letter to Association members Tuesday warning breeders of "serious threat" to the New Jersey Thoroughbred breeding industry if the bill is passed. "This drastic reduction would effectively eliminate the foundation necessary to sustain...

The Week in Review: Drazin on Prediction Markets as Threat to Racing: 'No One Seems to Sense the Danger Yet'

Can racing withstand the addition of yet another existential threat to the ever-expanding list of practices deemed harmful to our sport's health? Dennis Drazin, the chairman and chief executive officer of Darby Development LLC, which operates Monmouth Park, warned last week that the rising wave of prediction markets should be met with a greater sense of urgency and should be getting more scrutiny from racetrack operators and regulators. "I'm growing more and more concerned about the prediction market companies, such as Kalshi, Polymarket, and others that are now offering bets...

At Last Optimism that Meadowlands and Monmouth May Get Casinos

A 2016 referendum that would have allowed the Meadowlands to open a casino was a colossal failure. The ballot question lost by about 1.5 million votes. But nine years later, there is renewed hope that casino gaming could be on its way to two of the last tracks in the country that do not benefit from gaming revenue. Meadowlands owner Jeff Gural is confident that he will get a casino license sometime in 2026. Monmouth officials are also hopeful voters will approve a casino at the Jersey Shore track. If...

Dennis Drazin said it has...
