Taylor Made Stallions Launches “State-Bred Initiative Program”

Taylor Made Stallions will launch a new "State-Bred Initiative Program," the farm announced Thursday. According to their press release, the initiative is "a unique opportunity created to support and incentivize regional breeders who participate in state-bred programs outside of Kentucky." The program will allow breeders to breed approved mares to four stallions, Angel of Empire, Dr. Schivel, Idol and Tacitus, at a set stud fee, which will be waived as a complimentary no-guarantee once the resulting foal is reported as being born outside of Kentucky and supporting documentation for state-bred...

Wasabi 'Ventures' Into Deeper Water at Keeneland November

After dipping a toe into the pool with their very first consignment at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearlings Sale in September, Wasabi Ventures Sales dove right into the deep end with a seven-strong group of horses to sell at Keeneland November during Monday's seventh session. The newest branch of the Wasabi family, the consignment is an offshoot of Wasabi Ventures Stables, created by TK and Michele Pesula Kuegler in 2017. Previously based in the Mid-Atlantic, the pair purchased a farm, now named Serendipity Springs, in Lexington, KY in 2024. "We...

Kentucky Value Sires For 2025–Part 3: The $10K Club

If this seems a strangely specific category, that's because it is. There are two dozen sires standing in Kentucky at $10,000, a fee that attempts to preserve their dignity against a candid slide into the bargain basement. Though you're only a cent away from offering your stallion at four figures, you want him to look accessible without being low-rent. Only a couple are newcomers, all of which were dealt with separately in opening this series. Otherwise this is chiefly the bracket of youngish stallions whose rookie vogue is spent, anxious...

The Chosen Vron Back For More This Weekend

Don Valpredo is to Cal-breds what tungsten is to steel. "I absolutely love the training industry and the breeding industry here," said Vapredo, 85, over the phone from Bakersfield. "In fact, I'm sitting here today with the Stallion Register on my lap, trying to find the right mix for my broodmares." When Valpredo hasn't been producing Cal-breds--along with John Harris, he's responsible for 1994 California Horse of the Year, Soviet Problem--he's sought to popularize them through multiple warmed seats on multiple industry boards over multiple decades. They even named a...

Dr. Schivel Next Son of Violence to Join Stallion Ranks

The year 2024 could be a defining season for Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa stallion Violence. Not only must he continue to make his mark as a sire with a limited book of 125 mares, but the son of Medaglia d'Oro will now take the first steps towards becoming a sire of sires. He got off to a fast start doing just that last year as his young son Volatile made headlines with his first crop of yearlings. From just a $17,500 initial stud fee, the Grade I-winning Three Chimneys...

Kentucky Value Sires for 2024, Part I: New Stallions

And so another cycle opens, bringing all the usual dilemmas. To assist their resolution--albeit the exercise seldom fails to entail a degree of provocation, sometimes even offense--today we commence our annual quest for value among Kentucky stallions. This time round, value feels likely to prove quite elusive. With the middle market increasingly porous, stud fees overall are at a challenging level. If they were driven up by a long bull run in international bloodstock, that appears to be tapering away and there's evidently going to be quite a lag before...

Dr. Schivel Guts It Out In Santa Anita Sprint Championship

In a battle of raw speed, Dr. Schivel (Violence) proved to be too much to beat as he outlasted a returning Speed Boat Beach (Bayern) to take the GII Santa Anita Sprint Championship S. Last seen running a close-up third in the GI Bing Crosby S. at Del Mar over the summer, Dr. Schivel had plenty of back class to call on here: third last year at Meydan in the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen for his only start of the season, second to Aloha West (Hard Spun) in the 2021...
