Despite broad Thoroughbred industry support, those who seek to keep the slaughter pipeline active are flexing their muscles in Washington D.C. in the hopes of trying to kill progress. One such group is the Public Lands Council (PLC), a nonprofit representing cattle and sheep farmers who graze herds on public land. The Save America's Forgotten Equines Act (SAFE Act) has a new lease on life after it was reintroduced in both houses on Feb. 27. The act would prohibit slaughtering horses for human consumption and would also make it against the law to ship horses out of the country for the purpose of having them slaughtered. No horses have been slaughtered in the U.S. since 2007. U.S. slaughterhouses were forced to close down because regulations prohibited shipping the meat overseas without the oversight of inspectors from the Food and Drug Administration....

Multiple bottles of animal venom--most likely from snakes, spiders, and scorpions--have been intercepted by United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents in Cincinnati since the beginning of the year, according to a report by WKRC in Cincinnati. Agents told WKRC some of the supply, which originated in Mexico, was headed to racetracks.
