Palace Pier Overcomes In the Marois

Heavy ground must have played against TDN Rising Star Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}) in Sunday's G1 Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques le Marois, but such is the prowess of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum's unbeaten colossus that he duly overcame with a cosy success in one of the best renewals of Deauville's feature in recent times. Settled last early by an ever-confident Frankie Dettori, the 13-10 favourite who came to prominence in the June 20 G1 St James's Palace S. at Royal Ascot moved to Alpine Star...

France Added To UK Quarantine List; Dettori Chooses Deauville

From 4 a.m. on Saturday, travelers coming into the UK from France will be required to quarantine for 14 days. Horse people wanting to take in both this weekend's Deauville meeting-featuring the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois on Sunday--and next week's York Ebor meeting, therefore, have some decisions to make, and Frankie Dettori has chosen the French route with mounts booked on John Gosden's unbeaten G1 St James's Palace S. winner Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}) in the Marois and G1 Prix du Jockey Club winner Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe...

Sea the Stars's Miss Yoda Takes the Diana

Capping a week to remember even by his exalted standards, Frankie Dettori dropped in on Dusseldorf to whip up the crowd as he steered the Westerberg colour-bearer Miss Yoda (Ger) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) to glory in the G1 Henkel-Preis der Diana. On the front from the outset and allowed her own terms, the June 5 Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial winner was only headed briefly in early straight as Silence Please (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) loomed but when shaken up forged a 3/4-of-a-length success from Zamrud (Ger) (Samum {Ger}), who nosed...

Fourth Goodwood Cup For Super Stradivarius

There was a degree of worry and stress for the connections and abundant fans of Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) to endure during Tuesday's G1 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup, but ultimately it was the familiar outcome as Bjorn Nielsen's chestnut wrought a fourth victory in this historic prize. Momentarily pinned behind Nayef Road (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Santiago (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}) inside the last two furlongs, the 4-7 favourite had to make his own racing room as the last furlong neared but by now there seems very little that...

Enable Exits King George Well

Fresh off the back of her 5 1/2-length victory in the G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S. on Saturday, Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) emerged from the Ascot showpiece in good condition, trainer John Gosden confirmed. The next start for the formidable Juddmonte colourbearer is undecided, but she is targeting a pair of races at York--either the Aug. 19 G1 Juddmonte International S. or the Aug. 20 G1 Yorkshire Oaks. The former features a rematch with Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), while the outstanding dual Classic heroine Love (Ire) (Galileo...

King George Demolition By Enable

Ascot's promised match race failed to materialise on Saturday as Khalid Abdullah's epoch-defining Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) brushed aside the Ballydoyle contingent with an ease rarely seen on this exalted stage. Forcing her way into history as the first to win three renewals of the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Qipco S., the Juddmonte regina was at her exuberant best with Frankie Dettori at pains to contain her from the outset. As she sauntered behind Sovereign (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) with her well-matched rider content to allow last year's...

Enable Clash Headlines Saturday Action

Khalid Abdullah's Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) will bid to break new ground on Saturday in the 70th and certainly one of the strangest editions of the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO S. ever witnessed. Ascot's midsummer showcase may be lacking in diversity and numbers, even more so after Anthony Van Dyck (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was withdrawn Friday, but it will be a fascinating encounter to witness, with the Juddmonte queen looking for an astounding 11th victory at this level. Her Galileo-sired opponents Sovereign (Ire) and Japan (GB)...

Enable Faces Ballydoyle Trio

It will be a case of Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) versus Ballydoyle and Galileo (Ire) in Saturday's G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO S.  at Ascot, but she's been there before and connections are confident that the star mare is back in the right spot after her defeat in the July 5 G1 Eclipse S. at Sandown. John Gosden is expecting that comeback effort to have put her right for her historic bid for a third renewal of this prestige affair. "I was very open with everybody that,...

Lyons Hoping Siskin and Keane Partnership Continues in Sussex

Ger Lyons is increasingly hopeful Colin Keane will opt to maintain his partnership with Siskin (First Defence) in the G1 Qatar Sussex S. at Goodwood on Wednesday week--with Frankie Dettori "waiting in the wings" should he opt to stay in Ireland. Former Irish champion Keane has ridden the unbeaten G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas hero in all his career starts, but current rules in Ireland surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic mean he would have to spend 14 days in quarantine on his return home, should he travel to Goodwood. Lyons, who...

Nunthorpe S. Next for Sceptical

A trip to York for the G1 Nunthorpe S. is the next major target for Sceptical (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) following another excellent effort in defeat in Saturday's G1 Darley July Cup. Denis Hogan's 4-year-old has made remarkable progress since opening his account at Dundalk in November--going on to complete a hat-trick at the County Louth venue before landing a listed prize at Naas and finishing a half-length third in the G1 King's Stand S. at Royal Ascot. With Frankie Dettori keeping the ride at Newmarket, Sceptical this time...

French Aim For English King

A day removed from the G1 Investec Derby, trainer Ed Walker said English King (Fr) (Camelot {GB}), fifth as the early favourite, had come out of the race well and could target the G1 Grand Prix de Paris in September. "We'll let the dust settle and mull over it for a few days," Walker said. "I think an obvious target would be the Grand Prix de Paris, because he's French-bred and qualifies for the premiums. I wouldn't rule out the St Leger, but I wouldn't want to run him on...
