Alex Elliott Lands Session-Topping Shamalza At Strong Renewal Of Goffs February Sale

Well-bred Aga Khan mares dominated on the second and final day of the Goffs February Sale, with Alex Elliott going to €190,000 to secure Shamalza (Lope De Vega), who the bloodstock agent said would continue her career for Valmont and trainer Ralph Beckett.  A winner on debut for Dermot Weld back in September, Shamalza failed to land a blow on her only other start when the ground was heavy. A daughter of dual Group 2 scorer Shamreen (Dubawi), Shamalza is a sister to talented sprinter Shartash (Invincible Spirit) and Elliott...

Henderson Awarded The Willie Stephenson Memorial Trophy

Nicky Henderson has been awarded the Willie Stephenson Memorial Trophy, which commemorates the person or person whom the Goffs UK Board feel have made the biggest contribution to the success of the company during that year. The award was presented at Newbury this past Saturday. Training out of Seven Barrows Stables, the multiple champion trainer has had many talented horses pass through his care, not least Goffs UK alumni Constitution Hill (Blue Bresil) and Jonbon (Walk In The Park), who have won 18 Grade 1 races between them. Said Goffs...

Beeby Or Parrott? Five Talking Points From A Frenetic Foal Sale At Goffs

Bear with me now, but parallels could be drawn between the Irish football team's World Cup qualification campaign and the Goffs November Foal Sale. Last year's sale was akin to the boys in green thumping Portugal 2-0 in the Aviva Stadium. Nobody saw it coming.  One swallow doesn't make a summer, though, and it would all have been forgotten had Ireland come up short in Hungary. Well, Troy Parrott didn't read the script, and neither did Henry Beeby. A last-minute winner in Budapest gives Ireland a fighting chance of making...

Progeny Of “Exceptional” Sands Of Mali Dominates On Final Day Of Goffs Foal Sale

There can be few forces more unstoppable than a stallion on fire and Yeomanstown Stud's recent purchase Sands Of Mali ensured that the warm glow that burned bright in the sales ring throughout this year's Goffs November Foal Sale remained ablaze until the bitter end on Thursday.  Sands Of Mali was responsible for two of the most expensive lots - a filly and a colt at €100,000 and €90,000 respectively - on a day when the turnover climbed by 24%, the average by 17% and the median by 27%. Such...

European Mares Tempt Various American Agendas

Those American prospectors sufficiently resourceful--in every sense of that word--to mine some genetic gold at the European breeding stock sales generally fall into two camps. For some, an expanding and ever more lucrative grass (and synthetic) schedule in North America will offset the commercial distrust of turf bloodlines in their homeland. But others may also recognize that Thoroughbreds are more versatile than we typically allow them to be, hoping to emulate the impact on dirt of bloodlines imported from Europe by outstanding breeders of the last century. Both agendas have...

Sioux Nation Colt Heads Breeze-Up King Willie Browne's Last-Minute Shopping Spree At Goffs

Strong chance that Willie Browne leaves his Christmas shopping until the last minute. Why? The legendary breeze-up handler played a leading role at this week's Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale - one of the last yearling sales of the year - by spending €160,500 on four horses, which included the top lot by Sioux Nation at €88,000. Peter Nolan and Noel Meade, Spanish bloodstock agent Francisco Bernal along with BBA Ireland agents Mick Donohoe and Adam Potts could well be in a similar boat, as they also contributed to what turned...
