Seize the Grey Rebounds To Capture Spa Maiden

by Bill Finley & J. N. Campbell Seize the Grey (Arrogate) didn't show a thing in his debut, a July 1 maiden special weight race at Ellis Park. Trained by Hall of Famer Wayne Lukas and a $300,000 purchase at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale as a yearling, he beat just one horse and lost by 17 1/4 lengths. So it was no surprise when he was sent off at 16-1, a price that looked about right considering the competition he was set to face in Saturday's seventh race at Saratoga,...

A Jim Dandy Of A Graded Stakes Weekend

Equine or human, history is always about the six degrees of someone in racing's world. For instance, at 100-1 Jim Dandy beat Triple Crown champion Gallant Fox in the 1930 edition of the Travers S., which only featured four entries total. The horse who set up the longshot by engaging in a speed duel with the favorite over the mud was Whichone, a colt owned by Harry Payne Whitney (yes, that important family). And what other Thoroughbred did Whitney own? Well, that would be Upset, who did just that, when...

Drew's Gold Seeks First Graded Victory In Amsterdam

The Dutch imprint goes much deeper than archeological digs, as it is woven into the cultural and political history of the Empire State. New Netherland was never fully wiped from New York's cartographic DNA after the English won a series of 17th-century conflicts that resulted in the region's changing its national standard. The GII Amsterdam S., to be run at Saratoga Race Course this Friday, is a nod not only to the nearby New York town of the same name, but that important Dutch heritage. Formerly the Screen King S.,...

I wanted to share my first-hand experience on what happens when your trainer has been provisionally suspended, as well as my own thoughts on what is happening within our beloved industry. Every week, there is news in the trade publications of trainers who have been provisionally suspended or have had an unfavorable test result. The rules continue to be...
