TDN Derby Top 12: Cadence Quickens, Plot Thickens

by T.D. Thornton-Last Saturday's news that the No. 1-ranked Paladin (Gun Runner) will miss the GI Kentucky Derby with a non-displaced condylar fracture of his right front ankle created a vacancy atop this list. Any set of Derby rankings abhors a vacuum, but it wasn't easy deciding which of several worthy candidates out of the GI Florida Derby and GI Arkansas Derby would take over the kingpin slot.   1) COMMANDMENT (c, Into Mischief-Sippican Harbor, by Orb) O-Wathnan Racing; B-Lee Pokoik (KY); T-Brad H. Cox. Sales history: $485,000 RNA Wlg...

The Mare Steal That Forged Iron

Glen Eden. She says it's every bit as picturesque as it sounds. Two hundred acres across a valley in Chester, New Jersey: hunters and jumpers, 50 stalls, an indoor ring, another two outdoors. And a bunch of kids wanting to ride ponies. Nice, rural, domestic scene, a world away from the blue-collar grit of Aqueduct. Now, to be fair, horses take a ton of work wherever you are and whatever you're doing. "I mean, the sport-horse trainers, just like the racehorse trainers, it's a 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week job," Kathy Kunsman points...

View From the Deck with Barry Eisaman

The sales season looks a lot different these days for Dr. Barry Eisaman and his wife Shari. The husband-and-wife duo's Eisaman Equine was a fixture at the OBS sales for decades, but their shingle has been notably absent since 2023. With the pinhooking and consigning chapter closed, the Eisamans are now focusing on the other aspect of their business: breaking and training two-year-olds and rehabilitating older horses for some of the country's leading ownership groups. One morning earlier this month, as the breeze show was just getting started some 20...

Breeding Digest: Class Renews Sire's Posthumous Momentum

By now, no doubt, it must be among my most wearily familiar complaints. Only last week, in fact, I was again lamenting the days when old-school trainers would start Classic campaigns round one turn, gaining sharpness and conditioning without entering a stress zone. Nowadays those benefits are forfeited by the twin imperatives of hiding horses in their stalls, even as they need GI Kentucky Derby points. Those points being unavailable in sprints, the defining test of the American Thoroughbred has duly been shorn of raw speed. Other traditionalists presumably shared...

Undefeated Iron Honor Exits Gotham Win in Fine Form

St. Elias Stable, William H. Lawrence and Glassman Racing's Iron Honor (Nyquist) earned 50 points to the Kentucky Derby when winning Saturday's GIII Gotham at Aqueduct. According to Michele Dollase, assistant to trainer Chad Brown, the colt came out of the race in good order. "He came out of the race great. He ate up and looks good this morning," said Dollase. "We're on to the next race. As of right now, he is good. He came out of the race really good." Brown said post-race he will keep the...

Unbeaten Iron Honor Outbattles Crown the Buckeye in Gotham

Big-figure debut winner Iron Honor (c, 3, Nyquist--Orencia, by Blame) fought past the Ohio-bred Crown the Buckeye (Yaupon) in the stretch to make it two-for-two in Saturday's GIII Gotham S. at Aqueduct, good for 50 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. TDN Derby Top 12: Dreams of Roses Take The Chill Out of January

We're inside the 16-week mark for the May 2 GI Kentucky Derby.
