After Ulcer, Fever, Curlin Done Breeding For 2026

Curlin, at 22 one of the most influential stallions in modern history, will not cover any more mares during the 2026 breeding season after a brief illness, said Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa owner John Sikura Wednesday afternoon. "Curlin, about 10 days ago, exhibited some discomfort," said Sikura. "Dr. (Nathan) Slovis from Hagyard examined him and found an ulcer which was outside of his stomach," said Sikura. "This is highly unusual. He exhibited symptoms of pain, we treated him, and he had three days off breeding mares. He had a...

Speedway Stables' undefeated Cavalieri (Nyquist--Stiffed, by Stephen Got Even) has been retired from racing, with John Sikura's Hill 'n' Dale Farm acquiring a majority share in the Grade I winner. "She was a perfect five for five, an amazing talent and an alpha female, who thrilled us, each and every time she waltzed past her competition," said Speedway's Peter Fluor. "In light of the fact she has nothing more to prove race wise, it was considered appropriate timing to breed her. It has been a pleasure to be part of...

Retirement Brings Johnson A Labor of Love

Paul Reddam is Canadian, of course, so it was too easy a shot to miss. A horse they owned together ran second; ran great, Erik Johnson thought--and said so. "Erik, this isn't the Olympics," his partner replied. "No-one cares about second place in horseracing." This was a few years back, early in Johnson's Turf career, with the 2010 Winter Olympics still fresh in the memory. The U.S. team had lost the hockey final only in overtime, to the hosts in Vancouver. So Reddam did not miss his cue: no silver...

Sikura Responds to Breeders' Cup Regarding Endowment

On Wednesday's TDN Writers' Room podcast, Hill 'n' Dale Farm at Xalapa owner John Sikura challenged the Breeders' Cup to use some of their estimated $98.5 million endowment to shore up California racing and help to ensure its future. "I've always been a huge critic of the fact that the Breeders' Cup keeps $100 million of nominators' awards for a rainy day fund," Sikura told hosts Bill Finley, Randy Moss, and Zoe Cadman.
