Hess Fined $1K for Signing Owner's Name On Claim Slip

The falsification of an owner's signature on an opening-day claim slip at Keeneland has cost trainer Bob Hess, Jr., a $1,000 fine. Hess waived his right to a formal hearing with the Keeneland stewards. "Bottom line, I made a mistake," Hess told TDN via phone Tuesday afternoon. "And it won't happen again. It was kind of a time crunch. We didn't have the claim slip signed by the owner, so I signed on his behalf, which is a breach of the rules." The horse Hess tried to claim for $80,000...

The Week in Review: Harness Track's Closing a Cautionary Tale For All of Racing

Covering the first ever night of racing at Pompano Park, which took place Feb. 4, 1964, Earl Straight of the Fort Lauderdale News had this to say: "Harness racing has arrived in Broward County and it is going to be with us for a long, long time." He wasn't stepping out on a limb. With almost no competition for the gambling dollar, all forms of horse racing were thriving back then and there was no reason to believe that Pompano would be an exception. It was supposed to be to...

Peter Brant's 'TDN Rising Star' Regal Glory (Animal Kingdom) got the jump on stablemate Shantisara (Ire) (Coulsty {Ire}) with three-sixteenths of a mile remaining in Saturday's GI Jenny Wiley S. at Keeneland and dug in gamely to hold off her younger rival to prevail, providing trainer Chad Brown with a record fifth Jenny Wiley win, all since 2015. Brown overtook his mentor Bobby Frankel and Hall of Famer Bill Mott with the win. "I'm a lucky guy with owners like Mr. Brant and plenty before him that have sent me...

Stonestreet Stables LLC's Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) touched 3-2 in the final stages of the wagering for Saturday's Listed Giant's Causeway S. at Keeneland, but drifted all the way out to 19-10 and asserted her class to post her third career black-type success in stakes-record time. Away fairly, the 190,000gns Tattersalls October acquisition settled in fifth position and raced a touch keen three off the inside into the turn. A pace-compromised third as the odds-on choice behind Coinage (Tapit) in the Sept. 1 GIII With Anticipation S. at the Spa, the homebred raced handier to the speed in the Oct. 3 GII Pilgrim S....

Speightstown's Under Oath Romps to Rising Stardom

Less than 24 hours after 'TDN Rising Star' Shirl's Speight became the newest top-level scorer for WinStar Farm's outstanding Speightstown in Friday's Maker's Mark Mile, the nursery's homebred son Under Oath followed suit with an eye-catching Keeneland maiden victory to become the 22nd 'Rising Star' for the son of Gone West, still going strong at age 24. Third to big-figure graduate Unikee (Unified) in a sloppy six-furlong maiden at Gulfstream Mar. 12 and with no fewer than three next-out winners in his wake, Under Oath jumped as the 6-5 chalk,...

Shirl's Speight Upsets Maker's Mile

Dispatched at 9-1 despite entering on a two-race win streak, 'TDN Rising Star' Shirl's Speight (Speightstown) sling-shotted his way to his first top-level score in Keeneland's GI Maker's Mile S. Friday afternoon. Away in good order, the Fipke homebred bided his time in second last, running off the fence, as GI Shoemaker Mile winner and last out GI Breeders' Cup Mile runner-up Smooth Like Strait (Midnight Lute) dictated terms, putting up early splits of :24.95 and :49.63. Inching up a bit on the backstretch run, Shirl's Speight still had plenty...

Ribchester's Ruthin Prevails in the Limestone

Ruthin (GB) (Ribchester {Ire}) led home a 'TDN Rising Star' 1-3 finish in Friday's co-featured TVG Limestone S. at Keeneland, as she turned away a bid from her pace-pressing and favored stablemate, fellow 'Rising Star' Her World (Ire) (Caravaggio) and held off a late dive from Derrynane (Quality Road) for a narrow victory. So quickly into stride that jockey John Velazquez reported post-race that he surged back in the irons, Ruthin, a six-length graduate in a course-and-distance maiden 51 weeks ago to become the first winner for her sire, cut...

Looking for his fourth GI Jenny Wiley S. triumph in the last five years and fifth overall, Chad Brown will saddle two imposing favorites in Saturday's renewal of Keeneland's annual 1 1/16-mile turf test for older fillies and mares. Brown is tied with Bill Mott and former boss and mentor Bobby Frankel for the most victories in the race, which has been run since 1989. Given the slightest of nods on the morning line at 6-5 is Shantisara (Ire) (Coulsty {Ire}), who starts as a 4-year-old for the first time...

Count Again Somehow Under the Radar in Maker's Mark Mile

The owner of some very solid West Coast form, Count Again (Awesome Again) nevertheless projects to be at least a little bit forgotten from a pari-mutuel perspective in a high-class renewal of the GI Maker's Mark Mile, the Good Friday feature at Keeneland. A maiden winner during this track's fall meet in 2019 when under the care of Neil Howard, the bay won the 10-furlong GIII Singspiel S. for trainer Gail Cox in 2020, but has been kept between eight and nine panels since being switched to the barn of...
