La Cara in the Acorn
La Cara, Quietside Both Retired After Disappointing in Azeri Saturday

After finishing fifth and seventh, respectively, in Saturday's GII Azeri Stakes at Oaklawn Park, Tracy Farmer's La Cara (Street Sense--Cara Caterina, by Bernardini) and Shortleaf Stable's Quietside (Malibu Moon--Benner Island, by Speightstown) have each been retired. La Cara, a homebred for Farmer conditioned by Mark Casse, won both the GI Central Bank Ashland Stakes and GI DK Horse Acorn Stakes in 2025, in addition to the 2024 GIII Pocahontas Stakes and last year's Suncoast Stakes. The now-4-year-old bay made two starts in 2026, finishing off the board each time. She...

D.J. Stable To Send Sandman, Ewing To Ocala To Be Reevaluated

With Eclipse Award-winner Nitrogen (Medaglia d'Oro), who will be heavily favored in Saturday's GII Azeri Stakes at Oaklawn, having won her 2026 debut in the GIII Bayakoa Stakes, D.J. Stable could well be on its way to another successful year. But not everything has gone right in 2026 for the Green family and its stable. Two of its most prominent horses--Sandman (Tapit) and Ewing (Knicks Go)--have been surprisingly disappointing in recent races. In hopes of getting them back on track, the stable will be sending both to Mark Casse's farm...

Silent Tactic to Arkansas Derby

Silent Tactic (Tacitus), winner of the GIII Southwest S. Feb. 6 and narrow runner-up in Sunday's GII Rebel S., will be pointed to the $1.5-million GI Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Mar. 28, per trainer Mark Casse. "I thought Cristian (Torres) gave him a good trip," Casse said. "He was a little keener, which wasn't surprising to me because he's trained keener. He ended up settling for Cristian, but it took a little bit of doing. He was wanting to go. I think if you look at his numbers, especially if...

HOT SPRINGS, Ark.--A strong tradition for any Kentucky Derby hopeful along the campaign trail to May is passing the two turn test. With distance in mind, owners and trainers are looking for their nominees to stretch their legs, embrace the debate that comes in the form of traffic and find ways to grind out a hard-earned victory. At Oaklawn Park in the GII Rebel Stakes on Sunday, WinStar, First Go Racing and CHC Inc. owned colt Class President (Uncle Mo--Top Quality, by Quality Road) proved best at the wire as...

Tapit's Souper Landslide Graduates for Live Oak at Gulfstream

Live Oak Plantation's Souper Landslide (Tapit—Victory to Victory, by Exchange Rate) came from just off the pace to graduate in her career turf debut at Gulfstream Park on Thursday afternoon. Sixth going 1 mile 70 yards over the Gulfstream synthetic in November, she was given a 6-1 chance cutting back to a mile on the sod here. Not particularly in a hurry exiting post 7, the chestnut settled in a three-wide third as Mo Java (Mo Town) and 8-5 choice Role Play (Uncle Chuck) led through an opening quarter in...

Letter to the Editor: In Pursuit of a Level Playing Field

Anytime Bill Mott and Mark Casse have something to say I pay attention...and they have weighed in on the importance of maintaining use of furosemide (Lasix) on race day as a help in preventing pulmonary bleeding during races. I agree with them...but with one condition. Horses who receive Lasix should carry more weight. Bill and Mark and the other trainers speaking out contend that Lasix should be allowed until scientific studies can provide definitive proof that Lasix is a "performance-enhancing drug." As a former National Defense Research Fellow during my...

Will HISA Ban Lasix in All Races? Its Board of Directors Will Soon Decide

Since the inception of HISA, the diuretic Lasix (also known as furosemide) has been banned in all 2-year-old races and in stakes races. But that may be about to change. On May 22, HISA's nine-member Board of Directors will take a vote on whether or not the medication should be banned in all races. On that date, unless the board votes unanimously to continue the status quo, the medication will be banned. The board could also make any number of recommendations for modifications to the current provisions. To the extent...

RIVER WIND (f, 3, Lexitonian--Rachae Leigh, by Stormin Fever) entered this unveiling with a sharp worktab to her credit for trainer Norm Casse, and was supported by the betting public to the tune of 4-1 odds. Breaking well as Quick to Charm (Goldencents) was herded out, the daughter of Lexitonian stepped out to set the fractions and posted an opening quarter of :21.87 with a clear advantage on her rivals. Under a drive but well clear after a half-mile in :45.45, River Wind entered the lane three wide but still...

City Of Light's French Friction Stays Perfect In Dixie Belle Romp

Still undefeated now in two starts, French Friction showed her six-length maiden score was no fluke as she wired the field in Saturday's Dixie Belle Stakes at Oaklawn Park. A proven winner over course and distance in that Dec. 27 debut, the daughter of City of Light stepped into stakes company in her second start amidst a downpour for trainer Mark Casse and owner DJ Stable, the same powerhouse duo behind freshly-crowned champion filly Nitrogen (Medaglia d'Oro). Breaking from the rail under Cristian Torres, French Friction was outrun in the...
