Book 1 Debutants Living The Dream as Tattersalls October Gets Ready to Roll

NEWMARKET, UK -- After a weekend of brutally cold winds and rain at Park Paddocks, summer decided to reappear to bless the final yearling viewing day at Tattersalls with warm sunshine. An omen of bright days ahead, perhaps? Or if you're not a fan of symbolism, a more concrete guide to what could be in store over the next three days of Book 1 of the October Sale may have been gleaned from a car park full to the brim by early morning on Monday as the crowd rolled in...

Milestone Vineyard Harvest For Newsells Park

The first-ever vineyard harvest occurred at Newsells Park Stud this past week. The 1200-acre estate is the first Thoroughbred stud in Europe to establish a vineyard for premium English sparkling wine. The event was celebrated with hands-on picking and a gathering of Wine Club members and special guests, including Spurs legend Ossie Ardiles. Planted in 2022 on 30 acres of south-facing chalk, 41,000 vines of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier have flourished on the property. The first 'Newsells-grown' sparkling wines are expected beginning in 2028/29. Approximately 30,000 bottles are...

"It was strong form from Leicester and she was entitled to take a nice step forward," said winning rider Hector Crouch. "She moved into contention well today and I thought she would go and kick...

Seven Days: Every Sire Has His Day

There was much consternation when only three new Flat stallions retired to stand in Britain for the 2025 season. It remains to be seen whether this was a blip, but if it becomes a trend then obviously it is cause for concern. It is easy to understand why, in an increasingly commercial sphere, breeders would either flock to the proven elite (for those with mares good enough and pockets deep enough) or to the next first-season sire on the block who may be forgiven for a year or two until...

Distant Storm, 1.9m Arqana Breeze Up Topper, A New TDN Rising Star At Newmarket

Newmarket's Weatherbys British EBF Maiden Stakes has a rich history and Friday's renewal had the right feel to it as Distant Storm (Night Of Thunder) emerged to become the race's fourth straight TDN Rising Star. Whether Godolphin's €1.9million Arqana May Breeze-Up topper will be more Field Of Gold than Epictetus and Arabic Legend remains to be seen, but there was much to like about the way her battled by Ballydoyle's Constitution River (Wootton Bassett) with the pair clear. "He's been straightforward since he's arrived and full credit to the people...

Going some way along the road to justifying her £650,000 price tag at the recent Goffs UK Breeze-Up sale, she heads to Berkshire with a TDN Rising Star rosette in the bag after securing a...

Merry Fox Stud on a Mission to Find the Next Cursory Glance

It might seem a bit late in the year to be talking mating plans, but last week's call to Gary Hadden turned out to be a very timely one indeed, with the man at the helm of Craig Bennett's Merry Fox Stud having not one but two significant developments to report. Tragically, the first such update regarding Bennett's beloved Cursory Glance was of the worst possible kind. The daughter of Distorted Humour, who won the G3 Albany Stakes and G1 Moyglare Stud Stakes in a career spanning just four starts...

Isaac Shelby a First for Night Of Thunder and Wathnan Racing

Isaac Shelby, who became the first Governor of Kentucky in 1791, is believed to have inspired the Kentucky state motto: 'United we stand, divided we fall'. He sounds like he would have been a good man to run British racing, but the best we can hope for now is that his equine namesake makes as much of a success of his stallion career as the real Shelby did in his career in the military and politics.  It quickly became clear that Night Of Thunder (Ire) was a pretty special stallion...

By Brian Sheerin and Adam Houghton The sale of Irish Oaks heroine You Got To Me (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) during Tuesday's Sceptre Session at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale boiled down to a head-to-head between Kia Joorabchian and Newsells Park Stud owner Graham Smith-Bernal, with the Amo Racing founder once again underlining his burning desire "to compete" after coming out on top with a bid of 4.8 million guineas.
