Sovereignty works at Saratoga
Saratoga Notebook, Presented By NYRA Bets: Sovereignty Gets Work In Before Another Storm Slams Saratoga

SARATOGA SPRINGS--Just before 8 Saturday morning, Sovereignty (Into Mischief) beat the weather. But just barely. The GI Kentucky Derby and GI Belmont Stakes champ got his work in before the heaviest of yet another strong Saratoga thunderstorm pelted Saratoga Race Course. With rain beginning to fall, Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott was able to get Sovereignty out on the Oklahoma Training Track for a five-furlong work. Ridden by his assistant Neil Poznansky and working in company with stablemate Jefferson Street (Street Sense), Sovereignty covered the distance in 1:02.18 (5/12)....

A Happy Ending for Donegal Momentum

SARATOGA SPRINGS - Early Sunday morning, trainer Tom Morley walked down his shedrow at his barn on the Saratoga backstretch. He stopped in front of a stall occupied by a curious looking dark bay colt named Donegal Momentum (Uncle Mo). Morley snuggled close to the 4-year-old, hugged him, kissed his neck. He has affection for all his horses, but, after what Donegal Momentum went through on Saturday, he deserved an extra dose of tender love and care. During Saturday's one-mile GIII Kelso Stakes on the Inner Turf course, Donegal Momentum...

Twirling Candy's Fionn Nips Nitrogen In the Belmont Oaks

The white-hot Flavien Prat conjured up one final lunge from distant second favorite Fionn (Twirling Candy) and nabbed long-odds on choice Nitrogen (Medaglia d'Oro) right on the wire to take out Saturday's $500,000 GI Belmont Oaks Invitational Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. It was the fifth victory on the program for the reigning Eclipse Award-winning jockey. Opulent Restraint (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) won the break and stepped away to open a clear lead turning down the back from Totally Justified (Justify) and a three-wide Nitrogen, as Prat settled Fionn in the...

The Belmont Derby offers a salty assembly of turf horses, including European invader Luther (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who is trained by Charlie Fellowes. In three starts this term, Luther was runner-up on the synthetic at Chelmsford in April before finishing fourth behind winner Henri...

Belmont Weekend Turf-to-Dirt Stakes at Saratoga Officially Downgraded

After significant rain over the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival held last weekend at Saratoga Race Course, four of the graded races scheduled for the grass were moved to the dirt. The American Graded Stakes Committee automatically downgrades those races by one level--for that edition only--and reviews the runnings for the possibility of each race being restored to its original grade. None of the four graded races moved off the grass over the weekend at Saratoga had their original grade reinstated after review, according to a release from the American Graded...

Medaglia d'Oro's Nitrogen Remains Unbeaten in 2025 in Keeneland's Appalachian

Fresh off a pair of wins to launch her sophomore campaign, D J Stable's Nitrogen (Medaglia d'Oro) closed from off the pace to annex Tuesday's GII Appalachian Stakes at Keeneland. Content to survey a moderate opening pace of :23.31 and :47.45 set by longshot Fast Market (Volatile) from near midpack, the 6-5 choice began to mount her challenge while swinging to the outside turning for home. Gaining control midstretch, the favorite drifted out slightly, however, drew clear and was able to maintain a comfortable advantage late, finishing 2 1/4 lengths...

Keeneland's Blue Grass, Madison Stakes Play Starring Roles on a Traditionally Quiet Tuesday

It's exceedingly rare to see a Kentucky Derby point race run on a Tuesday, but thanks to a week of catastrophic weather in the Commonwealth, that's what is happening at Keeneland as a field of seven line up to contest the last of the major Derby preps--the GI Toyota Blue Grass Stakes. On the rail, and fortuitously drawn to the inside of a closer, is 'TDN Rising Star' River Thames (Maclean's Music). With the small field, the speedster will likely encounter considerably less traffic trouble than that post position would...

D. J. Stable's Nitrogen Has Chemistry in Florida Oaks

There was chemistry Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs. Nitrogen the element may be seventh on the periodic table, but Nitrogen (f, 3, Medaglia d'Oro--Tiffany Case, by Uncle Mo) the filly was first Saturday in the 42nd running of the GIII Florida Oaks. Last seen breaking her maiden in the Ginger Brew Stakes at Gulfstream Park in January, the D. J. Stable LLC homebred added her first graded tally to the two Grade I placings already on her CV. Midpack early from the ninth stall behind the :23.15 first fraction set...
