Not This Time's Misleading Comes From The Clouds In Santa Anita Finale

10th-Santa Anita, $68,500, Msw, 3-15, 3yo, f, 6fT, 1:10.39, gd, 1/2 length. MISLEADING (f, 3, Not This Time--Heart of Paradise {GSP}, by More Than Ready) executed a perfectly-timed rush to graduate in-style. A 10-1 shot here, the Keeneland September grad was in no hurry when it came to exiting the gate. Biding her time at the back of the field, the filly seemed out of it by the far turn, but the 3-year-old was gearing up for a late push. Misleading tipped towards the center of the course at the...

2025 Mating Plans, Presented By Spendthrift Farm: Blue Heaven Farm

The TDN staff is once again sitting down with leading breeders to find out what stallions they have chosen for their mares, and why. Today we caught up with Blue Heaven Farm. 2024 was Blue Heaven Farm's best year on record. In addition to several nice results at the Keeneland September sale, we were represented by five different stakes horses on the track, including two runners in the Breeders' Cup. We are hoping to keep the momentum going in 2025 and beyond.  Below are the mating plans for a handful...

A Space for Digital Two-Year-Old Sales? Consignors Weigh In

When Cary Frommer was first approached by Fasig-Tipton about the concept of a digital 2-year-old in training sale, she was immediately sold. Frommer isn't necessarily known for showcasing the sharpest drills at the breeze-up sales, so when the veteran consignor learned that the horses in the sale would be presented to buyers with a gallop video rather than a timed breeze, she saw this as an opportunity to let her trainees show off their true potential. "I love the idea that you don't have to ship the horses and train...

Breeding Digest: Octave's Grandson Hits a High Note

Okay, so possibly Magnitude (Not This Time) won't ever do anything quite like that again. But let's enjoy the moment, at least, and relish the sheer theater of his GII Risen Star performance--much, for instance, as people did the astounding sophomore debut of Dr. Carter in 1984. He had won two of seven previous starts; Magnitude, two of six. But even though so unpressured that he won by 17 lengths, Dr. Carter equalled the Hialeah track record. Their trainer John Veitch declared him better than Alydar. The stage was set...

Week In Review: Shrouded by Big Numbers That Could Be Deceiving, Magnitude's Risen Star was Still Pretty Darn Impressive

We don't often see 43-1 shots winning graded stakes by 9 3/4 lengths, and when we do, those victories are often subsequently proven to be flukes. If you go by the numbers, an off-the-charts, outlier effort like the one orchestrated by Magnitude (Not This Time) in Saturday's GII Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds--in which his 108 Beyer Speed Figure equated to a walloping 34-point improvement off his last race--is more likely to be met with pari-mutuel skepticism than enthusiasm when this colt races next, most likely in the GII...

Not This Time's Dazzling Move Does The 'Job' in Royal Delta

Making money moves down the lane, Dazzling Move lived up to her name as she took the GIII Royal Delta Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. The filly tried stakes company a half-dozen times last year under trainer Michael Trombetta, but Dazzling Move was unable to break through. Her best placing came when she was the runner-up in the Pumpkin Pie Stakes during the Belmont At The Big A meet in early November. The dark bay was last seen finishing off the board in the Rampart Stakes in Hallandale Dec....

TDN Takeaways: January's Graded Races

In this new series for 2025, we'll take a monthly look at trends and notable items from the nation's graded races and present them in quick, easy-to-digest bullet points. The month of January saw 16 graded races in the U.S.: two Grade Is, four Grade IIs, and 10 Grade IIIs, with 11 on dirt and five on turf. While they ranged from six furlongs to 12 furlongs, the most popular distance, by far, was 1 1/16 miles with six graded races contested over that distance. Gulfstream hosted the most graded...
