Winter Weather Continues to KO Racing

Frigid temperatures and snowy conditions continued to cause cancellations this week, with both Parx and Mahoning Valley abandoning live racing Tuesday. It was the second day in a row both tracks were forced to cancel races as they joined Oaklawn Park in abandoning Monday cards. Fair Grounds Postponing Thursday Program To Jan. 27

Due to extreme weather conditions that are anticipated over the next several days in southeastern Louisiana, officials at the Fair Grounds have announced that the nine-race program originally scheduled for this Thursday, Jan. 23 will be moved to next Monday, Jan. 27. Weather woes continue to plague Oaklawn Park, which is cancelling the Monday, Jan. 20 card in advance due to the forecast of freezing temperatures, according to an update from officials at the Hot Springs track. Leading Horse of the Year candidate Thorpedo Anna (Fast Anna) has an early 2025 racing schedule that could include two races at Oaklawn or a trip to Dubai, trainer Kenny McPeek said Wednesday afternoon via a press release from the Hot Springs track. Oaklawn Park, like much of the country impacted by recent winter weather, will add Thursday, Jan. 30 to the current racing calendar in an effort to recoup lost days of live racing. With 50 horses stabled at Payson Park Training Center this winter for the first time in his two-decade career, the 2020 and '21 Eclipse Award-winning trainer Brad Cox now has a geographically easier time targeting Florida races. Winter Weather Cancels Oaklawn's Weekend of Racing

With severe winter weather continuing to plague parts of the country and more on the way, Oaklawn Park has canceled racing for the entire upcoming weekend. Live racing was originally scheduled for Friday to Sunday, Jan. 10-12, but will now resume Friday, Jan. 17. The Hot Springs track has not yet announced a rescheduling of the races that were to be held this weekend. One black-type race--the $150,000 Pippin Stakes for fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up, going 1 1/16 miles--was slated for Saturday, Jan. 11.
