Ocala Stud's Gretzy The Great Sires First Winner

Mitts (Gretzy the Great), a well-beaten albeit rallying third in his debut over course and distance May 22, picked up the first win for his freshman sire (by Nyquist) Saturday via disqualification. The 5-1 shot was a close-up third up the backstretch while just a length back of pacesetter Watson (Brethren). Tipped outside of that rival to make a run into the final furlong, Mitts had to take up and redirect inside as Watson drifted out into him. Continuing to rally but unable to make up the deficit, Mitts wound...

Breeding Digest: A Formidable Legacy

She was claimed for $5,000 out of a race in which she bled badly. Yet here we are, 75 years later, celebrating Iltis (War Relic) as founder of a dynasty freshly decorated, coast to coast, on consecutive weekends. The moment of alchemy for Iltis was the transfer early in her breeding career to Ocala Stud, where a remarkable stallion, Rough'n Tumble, and the still more remarkable O'Farrell family were together putting Florida in the Thoroughbred map. A first date between Iltis and Rough'n Tumble produced My Dear Girl, as leading...

R Disaster Runs Off to Facile Gallant Bloom Victory at Big A

Despite having already proven herself to be the model of consistency, R Disaster came into Saturday's GII Gallant Bloom Stakes still in search of her initial win at the graded level. However, the 4-year-old daughter of Awesome Slew was able to check that off her list with a confident score in the 6 1/2-furlong test at the Big A. Senza Parole (Gun Runner) got the jump at the start, however, the even-money choice also benefitted from a clean break and soon found herself at the head of affairs. Racing through...
