Locked Looms Large in Woodward, 'Win and You're In' Weekend at Santa Anita Kicks Off Saturday

Multiple Grade I-winner Locked (Gun Runner) looms the big favorite in the scratch-decimated GII Woodward Stakes on Saturday at the Belmont Big A meet, but is far from the only marquee name this upcoming weekend across the country. One of three confirmed runners for Saturday's co-feature in New York, Locked comes into the race with a two-race skid to break after he missed the board May 2 in the GII Alysheba Stakes when returning to the races after a tour de force effort in the GI Santa Anita Handicap Mar....

Saratoga Notebook, presented by NYRA Bets: Fierceness May Be on His Way to the West Coast

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Earlier this week, owner Mike Repole took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to ask for help. He wanted to know what he should do with the two of the best older horses in the country, both, coincidentally, that he owns. Mindframe (Constitution) and Fierceness (City of Light). What to do with them next weekend? The options are simple enough. The $1 million GI Pacific Classic is being run at Del Mar in California next Saturday. The $1 million GI Jockey Club Gold Cup is being...

Donegal Momentum racing near the lead in Kelso Stakes
A Happy Ending for Donegal Momentum

SARATOGA SPRINGS - Early Sunday morning, trainer Tom Morley walked down his shedrow at his barn on the Saratoga backstretch. He stopped in front of a stall occupied by a curious looking dark bay colt named Donegal Momentum (Uncle Mo). Morley snuggled close to the 4-year-old, hugged him, kissed his neck. He has affection for all his horses, but, after what Donegal Momentum went through on Saturday, he deserved an extra dose of tender love and care. During Saturday's one-mile GIII Kelso Stakes on the Inner Turf course, Donegal Momentum...

Saratoga Notebook: Sandman Will Add Blinkers For Jim Dandy

SARATOGA SPRINGS - After seven weeks of going back and forth, Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse has made his decision. When Sandman (Tapit) runs in the GII Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga Race Course on July 26, he will be wearing a hood. The popular gray, owned by D. J. Stable LLC, St. Elias Stable, West Point Thoroughbreds and CJ Stables, looked striking Saturday morning when he hit the main track wearing black blinkers. Sandman worked five furlongs in :59.40 (1/9) and Casse is comfortable saying that Sandman will...

Phileas Fogg Wires Suburban, Holds Off Antiquarian

Jupiter Stable's Phileas Fogg (g, 5, Astern {Aus}--Merino, by More Than Ready), runner-up in the GIII Pimlico Special S. May 16, was sent to the front from his rail draw, enjoyed a clear advantage throughout and just held off Antiquarian (Preservationist) by a head to pull off a 6-1 upset in Saturday's GII Suburban S. at Saratoga. Favored 'TDN Rising Star' Locked (Gun Runner) was a well-beaten third. Sent straight to the front by Kendrick Carmouche, Phileas Fogg showed the way through fractions of :23.72 and :47.83, led by three...

Awesome Aaron An Upset Winner Of The Pimlico Special

Now a winner from six furlongs to 1 3/16 miles, Awesome Aaron continued his positive trend for trainer Norm Casse with an off-the-pace upset in the GIII Pimlico Special Stakes. After a career spent at nearly every level of racing, the 6-year-old gelded son of Practical Joke proved his 5 3/4-length roll in an allowance/optional claimer at Oaklawn last time out was no fluke (nor was the 104 Beyer Speed Figure that accompanied it). That win on Apple Blossom day Apr. 12, his first since getting claimed for $40,000 at...
