Bolt d'Oro Filly Our Lady Along In Time In Malvern Rose

Our Lady (Bolt d'Oro) made those that swallowed the 3-10 starting price sweat it out to the very finish, but the Canadian-based galloper saved her best for the final 100 yards, racing over the top of her fellow Pennsylvania-bred rivals to remain unbeaten in her three career starts to date in Monday's state-bred restricted Malvern Rose Stakes at Presque Isle Downs. A 6 1/4-length maiden winner at first asking over the Woodbine Tapeta on May 4, the $75,000 Fasig-Tipton February yearling turned $160,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic breezer added a May 24...

Golden Afternoon and Nick Vaccarezza
After Surviving a School Shooting and Cancer Surgery, a 25-Year-Old Trainer Savors His First Win

Nick Vaccarezza, 25, won his first race from 12 starts as a licensed trainer June 30 at Presque Isle Downs. Although every conditioner's first victory is a special accomplishment, Vaccarezza's was unique because it occurred in a stakes race. Off at even-money odds, Keeneland-based shipper Golden Afternoon (Goldencents) prompted the pace and drew off by 2 1/2 lengths to capture the $100,000 Tom Ridge Stakes over six furlongs. The win was also sweet because Golden Afternoon is owned by a partnership of friends (Eddie and Pat Greco, Scott Jaffe, and...

Pennsylvania Tracks Pull Back Curtain–a bit–on Takeout Rates

The Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission (PHRC) on Tuesday voted to grant Thoroughbred racing dates for 2025 that will feature 150 programs at Parx, 105 at Penn National, and 76 at Presque Isle Downs. Prior to the vote on the dates, however, executives from each track were asked to do something rarely required by racing commissions in this country: Principals from each venue were requested to explain the rationale behind the 2025 takeout rates that accompanied each licensee's dates request. Takeout rates, the per-bet pricing structure that tracks and states impose...

Presque Isle Cuts Four Dates from 80-Day Season

Presque Isle Downs will eliminate four dates from its 80-day racing season this year by slicing four late-summer Thursdays off its schedule. The track received unanimous permission to do so during Tuesday's Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission meeting. Presque Isle's director of racing, Matthew Ennis, described the track's reasoning for dropping the dates. "We always take a hard look at our purse funding as we're going throughout our offseason to make sure that we have competitive purses for the upcoming meet," Ennis said. "We suffered a very poor January as a...

Speightstown's El Terreno Blitzes Over Gulfstream Tapeta To 'TDN Rising Stardom'

Given the dominance she showed when blowing away a field of Presque Isle maidens by 11 lengths in fast time on her six-furlong debut Oct. 25, the connections of El Terreno (Speightstown--Palma, by Malibu Moon) would hardly have been dismayed when Friday's second race from Gulfstream Park was washed off the turf and onto the synthetic surface. Accordingly smashed into 2-5 favoritism, the Castleton Lyons homebred duly obliged with another commanding performance, this one good for 'TDN Rising Star' honors. Kicked straight into the lead by Irad Ortiz, Jr., El...

Riding Six Tracks In Six Days, Conner's Mileage Surpassed Only By His Work Ethic

When Penn National shut down for a one-month planned break Sept. 23, Tyler Conner, the track's third-leading rider this year in both wins and earnings, wasn't sure what he'd do to keep his income flowing. Yet the 30-year-old jockey, who is soft-spoken but highly driven, managed to build enough out-of-town business to the point where he has just completed a demanding six-day run of riding at six different tracks in the Northeast and Canada. His whirlwind tour included more than 1,800 miles of driving, nearly all of which he accomplished...
