Fresnay-ssance: Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan's Grand Plans for Rejuvenated Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard

An invitation to visit Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard has always been a memorable experience for a bloodstock enthusiast, considering few nurseries worldwide can claim to have produced as many champions, both on the track and in the breeding shed. French champion sires Asterus (Teddy), Tourbillon (Ksar), Pharis (Pharos), Goya II (Tourbillon) and Djebel (Tourbillon) under the Boussac era, then Arc winner Bago (Nashwan) and Breeders' Cup winners Miesque (Nureyev), Spinning World (Nureyev), Domedriver (Indian Ridge), Six Perfections (Celtic Swing), Karakontie (Bernstein) to name only a few of the Niarchos family's best....

The Lion In Winter Added to Prix Jean Prat Field

The Lion In Winter has been supplemented for Sunday's G1 Prix Jean Prat at Deauville, which could have a field of up to 10 runners.  The most recent win for Coolmore's son of Sea The Stars came over the same distance of seven furlongs (1400m) in last year's G3 Acomb Stakes at York, a race in which subsequent 2,000 Guineas winner Ruling Court (Justify) finished third. Also added to the field at Thursday's confirmation stage was Apollo Fountain (No Nay Never). Trained by Andre Fabre, he won the Listed Prix...

Haras de Beaumont Buys Into Jean Prat Winner Puchkine

The Chehboub family's Haras de Beaumont has purchased a 50 per cent share in last weekend's G1 Prix Jean Prat winner Puchkine (Fr) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) from his owner-breeder Alain Jathiere.  The three-year-old colt, trained by Jean-Claude Rouget, was unbeaten in three races as a juvenile and has now won five of his eight starts. He is likely to be seen next in the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest in Deauville on August 4. Last year, the Haras de Beaumont team made a similar strategic mid-season purchase when buying into Serge...

Murphy To Replace Dettori Aboard Chaldean In Sunday's Prix Jean Prat

Oisin Murphy will take over from the suspended Frankie Dettori aboard 2,000 Guineas winner Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in Sunday's G1 Haras d'Etreham Prix Jean Prat at Deauville. Dettori will miss the ride after receiving a nine-day careless riding ban at Royal Ascot last month and that suspension will also rule him out of riding Emily Upjohn in the Coral-Eclipse on Saturday.  Murphy has never ridden Chaldean in public before but Barry Mahon, racing manager for Juddmonte, the owners of the top-notch colt, said once the Irishman was available to...

July Cup In The Spotlight On Saturday

Enjoying days in the sun during the last decade with Lethal Force (Ire) and Harry Angel (Ire), it did not take long for Clive Cox to unearth another star sprinter and the former's son Golden Horde (Ire) looks to emulate his achievement in winning the G1 Darley July Cup at Newmarket on Saturday. Dynamic when winning the G1 Commonwealth Cup on similar ground at Royal Ascot on June 19, last year's G2 Richmond S. winner and G1 Middle Park S. runner-up gets six pounds weight-for-age from the older brigade and...

The Weekly Wrap: Long Live The King

In the space of a fortnight, Shadai Stallion Station lost its two flagship stallions, Deep Impact (Jpn) on July 30, and King Kamehameha (Jpn) on Aug.10. The pair won back-to-back runnings of the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) in 2004 and 2005. A year older than Deep Impact at 18, King Kamehameha had been pensioned earlier this year and his legacy at stud was outlined by Kelsey Riley in Saturday's TDN. Losing two such heavyweights in the same year is doubtless a blow to Shadai but in Japan's stallion table for...

Over Too You

With Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) delivering for Frankie on Tuesday, the weight of expectation now rests on Too Darn Hot (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) to maintain the run in Wednesday's G1 Qatar Sussex S. at Goodwood. In many ways, the Lloyd-Webbers' 'TDN Rising Star' was the one who at the start of the season promised most to make this a memorable season for Dettori with his unbeaten streak culminating in juvenile champion status. That it has hardly gone to any kind of plan so far in 2019 is well-documented,...
