NYRA, Fox Will Look to Fill Void Left by FanDuel TV's Demise

It will be very hard for the racing industry to replace what FanDuel TV meant to the sport with its wall-to-wall coverage of races from across the country and its ability to attract new fans to the sport. But according to Tony Allevato, NYRA's chief revenue officer and the president of NYRA Bets, his team is ready to do what it can to bring more racing to the television audience in an effort to make up for the loss of FanDuel TV. FanDuel announced last week that it will soon...

MSW Purses At Ellis, Kentucky Downs Projected To Remain Level Compared To Last Summer

Purse levels for maiden special weight (MSW) races at Kentucky's two summer meets, Ellis Park and Kentucky Downs, are projected to remain level this year compared to 2025. At Ellis, that means $100,000 per MSW race over the course of a 25-date meet in July and August, and at Kentucky Downs, the MSW purses will be $170,000 over seven dates in August and September. The disclosures were made by representatives of each track at the Apr. 1 meeting of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund (KTDF) advisory committee. Although MSW purse...

Court Declares Previous Purse-Based Assessments “Unlawful” As HISA Moves Forward With New Starts-Based Methodology

A federal court in Kentucky on Wednesday issued a declaratory judgement in a lawsuit brought by Churchill Downs, Inc. (CDI) against the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act Authority (HISA), ruling that assessment fees based on a purse-weighted methodology that the Authority used between 2022 and 2024 were "arbitrary and capricious, and therefore unlawful." However, the ruling did not vacate any of the previously issued HISA orders relating to those fees, noting that since the start of 2026, HISA and its governmental overseer, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), have abandoned the...

FanDuel TV To Phase Out Through 2027

FanDuel TV, the television channel known for bringing horse racing into American homes since 1999, will be phased out over the next 20 months. The report indicates that the channel will honor its current broadcasting commitments through this year's Triple Crown, including the Keeneland Spring Meet, but will then cut 60% of its workforce in June. Remaining employees will kept on until November of this year. According to the meeting, FanDuel CEO Amy Howe told...

Letter To The Editor: Beyond HISA's Star Metric–One Small Number Rewrites The Big One

I've read every HISA annual metrics report since the first one landed in 2024. All three of them. Cover to cover, footnotes included. And every year I've come away with the same feeling: something is missing. Not from the effort. The effort is real. HISA has built the most comprehensive equine health database in the history of American racing. Seven million veterinary treatment records. Treatment histories that follow horses across state lines for the first time. The infrastructure is extraordinary. What's been missing is statistical depth. Year after year, the...

HISA 2025 Benchmarks: Sustained Reductions In Fatalities From Pre-HISA Numbers

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) published its 2025 Annual Metrics Report Tuesday which showed just 1.04 racing-related equine fatalities per 1,000 starts. The report notes that that number, which is "a sustained reduction from pre-HISA benchmarks", also marks a nearly 50% decline since reporting began nationally in 2009 by The Jockey Club's Equine Injury Database (EID). "Our mission is clear: to make Thoroughbred racing safer for horses and riders while safeguarding the integrity and future of the sport," said HISA CEO Lisa Lazarus. "The data contained in this...

Letter To The Editor: Is There Hope For California Thoroughbred Racing?

California's storied racetracks once set the gold standard in American racing. Yet today, many owners are asking: is there hope? From my vantage point as a longtime owner, the answer lies in collaboration, clear communication and a shared commitment to the future. We've seen encouraging signs--new training programs, emerging talent and a continued passion among participants. California racing does not lack for quality horses, trainers or owners. What we must do now is harness that strength and align it toward a common purpose. After retiring from a career in public...

Letter To The Editor: The Heart Of Horse Racing

I have been reading the opinions of many respected people who have invested greatly in the racing industry and have been involved in it for decades. Many of their observations about the state of the sport and the organizations that are supposed to lead it are correct. I would like to share what I have discovered over the past few years. I have been involved in breeding and racing Thoroughbreds for more than 40 years, and I care deeply about the future of this industry. Like many others, I have...

Hawthorne Thoroughbred Meet Gets Important Funding Go-Aheads After Two-Day Bankruptcy Hearing

After two days of proceedings in a federal bankruptcy court in Chicago Tuesday and Wednesday, judge Timothy Barnes has authorized the release of funds to pay outstanding wages owed to Hawthorne employees and to pay for the necessary equipment to resurface the track in preparation for a Thoroughbred meet, according to Illinois Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association (ITHA) president Chris Block, who attended the hearings.
