Historic Salisbury a Nursery of Champions

Most British racecourses now hold considerably more race-days than used to be the case. Salisbury, the second-oldest course in the country after Chester, is no exception. The curiosity of its calendar is that its year nowadays starts later than formerly, with its curtain-raiser now established as taking place on the Sunday afternoon on which the 1,000 Guineas is run at Newmarket. This means that there can no longer be Guineas contenders limbering up at Salisbury before heading to Newmarket, unlike in 1979 when Salisbury held one of its best-remembered race-days...

Darley's Freshman Sire Palace Pier
First Stakes Winner For Palace Pier As Morris Dancer Leads Stonehenge One-Two For Freshman

With the two only realistic contenders of the three runners contesting Wednesday's Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Stonehenge Stakes at Salisbury, Darley's first-season sire Palace Pier was almost guaranteed to make his breakthrough in black-type company and so it proved as Morris Dancer led home A Bit Of Spirit for a neat one-two. Runner-up in the Vintage at Goodwood last month, Godolphin's homebred surprisingly drifted to 11-10 second favouritism to see off the Clive Cox-trained 5-6 market-leader and after taking over from that peer approaching the furlong pole drew away...

Black-Type Analysis: Palace Pier Colts Go Head-To-Head at Salisbury

Wednesday, Salisbury, post time: 15:30, BRITISH STALLION STUDS EBF STONEHENGE STAKES-Listed, £40,000, 2yo, 8fT Field: A Bit Of Spirit (Ire) (Palace Pier {GB}), Morris Dancer (Ire) (Palace Pier {GB}), Mystic Moment (GB) (Time Test {GB}). TDN Verdict: Despite the fact that Eve Johnson Houghton seems to have the midas touch this year, the class deficit of her runner Mystic Moment means that this boils down to match between the Vintage runner-up Morris Dancer and the Listed Pat Eddery Stakes runner-up A Bit Of Spirit. The Gosdens' runner has the edge...
