Chief Wallabee Has Come a Long Way in a Short Time

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - By the time 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard' Chief Wallabee (Constitution) got to the races, Renegade (Into Mischief), the 2-1 morning-line favorite for Saturday's GI Belmont Stakes, already had three starts on his resume. When the Chief won that first career start back on Jan. 10, Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott thought he had a nice little horse he could have some fun with. Mott was thinking he had a horse that could do some good at a mile, maybe win the GI Woody...

The Long Journey to Maximum Velocity

It's just like Wayne Lukas used to tell him. "One of these days you're going to get smart," Lukas would say. "And you'll quit that. And come over to the Thoroughbred business." This was when Bill Childs was still in the Quarter Horse game, and Lukas had already made the switch that transformed our sport. "Well, you're right," Childs told Lukas. "I'd love to. But man, it just takes so much money to be able to withstand it." "Well," Lukas shrugged. "You'll figure it out." And here he is, all...

“She's Wonderful”: Om N Joy to Get Easy 30 Days, Points to Clement Hirsch

Trainer Aggie Ordonez had a glittering prognosis for Om N Joy (Om) the day after her upset victory in the GII Santa Margarita Stakes where she collected a second graded win, and added that her stable star will now point to the GI Clement L. Hirsch at Del Mar. "She's wonderful." Short and sweet, but words all connections want to hear. Ordonez reported the filly was no worse for wear Sunday morning, and that she would have an 'easy 30 days' of training before focus shifted to Del Mar. The...

Approaching Belmont, DeVaux Likes What Golden Tempo is Showing Her

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - As a most memorable May gives way to June, trainer Cherie DeVaux believes that Golden Tempo (Curlin) is ready for his next challenge, the GI Belmont Stakes Saturday at Saratoga Race Course. Four weeks and three works after his dramatic victory in the GI Kentucky Derby, which secured DeVaux a forever place in racing history, Golden Tempo breezed Saturday and shipped Sunday from central Kentucky to upstate New York for the third and final Belmont Stakes at Saratoga. Just before his victory by a neck at...

Belmont Notes: Renegade Could Very Well be the Belmont Favorite

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Post positions will be assigned for the 158th running of the GI Belmont Stakes on Monday at Universal Preservation Hall. The morning line for the final leg of the 2026 Triple Crown will also be announced. Even though he finished second to Golden Tempo (Curlin) in the GI Kentucky Derby, Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher thinks his Renegade (Into Mischief) could very well vie for favoritism on the morning line, which is put together by David Aragona of the New York Racing Association. "I think...

Belmont Racing Festival Hopefuls, Other Big Names, On Worktab

'TDN Rising Star' presented by Hagyard Golden Tempo (Curlin) was not the only marquee name on the worktab over the last 48 hours, as horses prepping for next week's Belmont Stakes Racing Festival--as well as some household names not heading to upstate New York--turned in breezes at racetracks from coast-to-coast, from Saratoga, Laurel and Fair Hill to Santa Anita. To follow are works in alphabetical order at the various venues with parenthetical mention of intended targets or races to which the horses have been nominated. Saratoga (Oklahoma unless othewise indicated)...

Chip Honcho and Potente Will Skip Belmont

The June 6 GI Belmont Stakes has lost two potential starters as the trainers of Potente (Into Mischief) and Chip Honcho (Connect) have declared their horses out of the race. The news was first reported by the Daily Racing Form's David Grening. Trainer Steve Asmussen told Grening he is not sure where Chip Honcho will run next. Bentornato and Book'em Danno Set for Showdown in True North

Trainer Jose D'Angelo has confirmed that last year's GI Breeders' Cup Sprint winner Bentornato (Valiant Minister) will make his next start in the GIII True North Stakes on June 6 at Saratoga. That means he will be facing the horse that nosed him out for the sprint championship last year, Book'em Danno (Bucchero). The True North carries a purse of $400,000 and is run at 6 1/2 furlongs. The two have not met since the 2024 G3 Saudi Derby, in which Book'em Danno was second and Bentornato was third. "Book'em...

Week in Review: 'Off the Fence' Angle Favors Renegade in Belmont Stakes

The historically unrewarding inside post position--now winless in 41 years--kept Renegade from being favored in the GI Kentucky Derby. But the adverse gate draw and some jostling both after the break and in the final stages didn't keep this hard-charging Into Mischief colt from barreling home with a tenacious late run that, in many years, would have been good enough to win the first leg of the Triple Crown. The connections of Renegade (like 15 other Derby participants) predictably bypassed the May 16 GI Preakness Stakes. After breezing a half-mile...

New York Pension Fund For Backstretch Workers Enters 56th Year

The New York Backstretch Employees Pension Trust has a bit of a "well-kept secret" shroud to it. Even longtime Thoroughbred owners who compete on the New York Racing Association (NYRA) circuit are sometimes unaware that a pension fund exists for the backstretch workers, and that 2% of the purses at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course are invested toward the retirements of the people who provide daily, hands-on care for horses. Despite the under-the-radar nature of the fund, those who oversee it are continually trying to make sure...
