Sioux Nation Busiest Flat Stallion; Foal Crop Rises

Coolmore's Sioux Nation topped the charts of the busiest Flat stallions in Britain and Ireland in 2022, with 255 mares covered, just head of Tally-Ho Stud's new recruit Starman (GB) on 254.  Weatherbys' recently published Return of Mares shows that Starman's stable-mate Mehmas (Ire) was sent 249 mares, the same number as Coolmore resident Wootton Bassett (GB), while the most active sire in Britain was Overbury Stud's Ardad (Ire), who covered 205. The only other British-based stallion in the top ten on numbers was the champion sire Frankel (GB), who...

Seven Days: Who Bears Wins

'Industry heavyweights' seems to have been the buzz phrase of the last few weeks, and we have a few of those in our long-running 12-to-follow competition organised by my husband every Flat and National Hunt season. Those competing this summer include several leading Irish stud masters, bloodstock agents, trainers, breeders, sales company executives, and the head of the Tote. And they are all currently trailing in the wake of an 11-year-old boy who was shrewd enough to include Little Big Bear in his list. What a selection that was. Mind...

Sioux Nation's Lakota Sioux On Top In The Sweet Solera

Gallop Racing's 2-year-old distaffer Lakota Sioux (Ire) (Sioux Nation--Shemiyla {Fr} {GSW-Fr, $169,373}, by Dalakhani {Ire}) bounced back off a third in Royal Ascot's Listed Chesham S. to secure a career high in Saturday's G3 Jewson Sweet Solera S. at Newmarket, becoming the second black-type winner for her freshman sire (by Scat Daddy). She had earlier debuted with a May 20 third at Haydock before plundering a May 30 Lingfield maiden by 6 1/2 lengths in her penultimate start. The 10-3 second favourite was swiftly into stride and raced in a...

She had previously snagged her May 31 debut at Newbury and posted a fifth contesting Royal Ascot's June 17 G3 Albany S. in her penultimate start. Isolated in...

Amo Racing Appeals Norfolk Result

Amo Racing has lodged an appeal against the result of the G2 Norfolk S. during the 2022 Royal Ascot meeting. Their horses Walbank (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) and Crispy Cat (GB) (Ardad {Ire}) were second and third in that race to The Ridler (GB) (Brazen Beau {Aus}). The winner veered abruptly across the course late in the five furlong contest, which impeded Crispy Cat and Brave Nation (Ire) (Sioux Nation), who finished fourth. Jockey Paul Hanagan received a 10-day ban for careless riding aboard the winner. The winning margin was 1...

QUEEN SERENITY (IRE) (f, 2, Sioux Nation--Maybe I Will {Ire}, by Hawk Wing) validated a debut quote of 59-100 to provide her sire (by Scat Daddy) with already a sixth individual first-crop winner. Away fairly, the bay filly was pulled to the outside and chased the early exchanges from second. Asked to win her race 200 metres from home, Queen Serenity quickened up nicely and had a margin of 1 1/2 lengths on pacesetting Balayage (Ity) (Pounced) at the line. The...

Cotter: 'Ascot-Bound Matilda Picotte Not For Sale At Any Price'

No amount of money will persuade the owners of impressive Curragh maiden winner Matilda Picotte (Ire) (Sioux Nation) to give up on their dream of walking into the winner's enclosure at Royal Ascot, according to the filly's trainer Kieran Cotter, who said "everyone wants a slice" of the Queen Mary-bound speedster. Matilda Picotte maintained the flying start of Coolmore's first-season sire Sioux Nation by making all to score on debut at the Curragh on Monday and, in doing so, she landed some hefty wagers. The owners of the filly are...

WC Equine Building On Positive Beginnings

Ellie Whitaker and Tegan Clark clearly remember the empty silence that followed an email blast out to the industry upon the launch of WC Equine. "We had a list of trainers' emails," recalls Clark. "And we put together an email saying we're here, this is what we're doing, along with background of what we've done before, and emailed 93 of them." Whitaker takes up the story. "We got three responses, all saying good luck! It's about selling a product at the end of the day and we didn't have a...

Kodiac Filly Anchors Wednesday's Craven Session

NEWMARKET, UK—The excellence of the Tattersalls marketing team is familiar, but nobody realised they had friends in quite such high places. For the racing gods, as a rule so notoriously uncooperative, have this week followed a script that could scarcely have promoted the Craven Breeze-Up Sale more lavishly—with graduates of last year's auction winning Classic trials, just up the road on the Rowley Mile, shortly before each of its two sessions. On Wednesday it was the turn of champion juvenile Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), who extended his unbeaten...

Seven Days: The Price Of Progress

Even at this early stage of the season, we can be forgiven for mentally fast-forwarding to the first weekend of June at Epsom. It is after all the best weekend of the year, featuring the best race of the year.  There are plans afoot in Newmarket - plans being mooted by the Jockey Club, no less - to dig up one of the best turf gallops on the Heath to install a new all-weather racecourse and training facility. At a time when there's concern as to having enough horses to...
