Who Will Be The Leading Freshman Sire Of 2026: More Predictions

With the first major 2-year-old sale, OBS March, now in the books, and the next round, the OBS April sale, right around the corner, it's time for some predictions. We asked the experts who their pick is for leading freshman sire and also asked them for a "sleeper pick," or a stallion that will perform beyond expectations. Here's what they had to say: STEVE VENOSA Top Pick: Jackie's Warrior (Spendthrift Farm, $25,000) Training them this year, I think the obvious two horses are Jackie's Warrior and Drain the Clock. They...

Thursday Insights: Gun Runner Filly Leads Thursday Maidens

6th-OP, 110K, Msw, 3yo, f, 1 1/16m, 4:04 p.m. QUITE BAFFLING (Gun Runner) impressed enough at OBS March last year, breezing a quarter in :21.1, to warrant a $750,000 final bid from Case Clay Thoroughbred Management on behalf of owner Wathnan Racing. Debuting around two turns, Quite Baffling is a daughter of the unraced Graydar mare Baffling, herself a half-sister to MGISW and successful sire Constitution (Tapit). Another half-sister, GSW Jacaranda (Congrats), has produced SW/GISP Be You (Curlin). The only first-time starter in the field is trained by Steve Asmussen...

Juvenile Champ Ted Noffey Works, Tommy Jo Sidelined

DEL RAY BEACH, FL--Newly-minted Eclipse Juvenile champion Ted Noffey (Into Mischief) drew a small crowd when registering a workmanlike four-furlong move at Palm Beach Downs Friday morning. Campaigned by Spendthrift Farm, the undefeated colt worked in tandem with the farm's Authentic Chance (Authentic). The pair completed the task in :50.81, with the roan finishing slightly ahead of his workmate. The work was the first half-mile move for the 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard' since his victory in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile victory at Del Mar in November. He...

The Producers: Galloping Ami and Streak of Luck

Last summer, we began "The Producers" as a way to spotlight a few of the extraordinary mares--and some of the people behind them--who produced the Grade I winners of 2025. With 83 individual North American Grade I winners in the books for the 2025 season, we return to it now, continuing with two mares who each made a massive impact at the fall breeding stock sales. Galloping Ami, dam of Kopion Galloping Ami (Victory Gallop) is a mare accustomed to making headlines. Named Outstanding Broodmare in Canada in 2016 after...

Tamara Retired To Spendthrift After Injury Setback

Beholder's Grade I-winning daughter Tamara (Bolt d'Oro) has been retired to Spendthrift Farm following an injury that occurred after training Saturday. The news, first reported by the Daily Racing Form, comes as the latest blow for the soon to be 5-year-old whose career has been a progression of starts and stops dating back through her 2-year-old campaign. Trainer Richard Mandella told the DRF's Steve Anderson that Tamara's post-workout X-rays were "clean, but she is off a little in her right front. They're planning to retire her, and I'm all for...

Into Mischief Ties Bold Ruler's Record Sequence

At some point, the final day of a given year will also close out his reign. For now, however, its seamless extension has secured Into Mischief parity with Bold Ruler himself, his seventh consecutive general sires' championship matching the Claiborne legend's monopoly between 1963 and 1969. Bold Ruler actually added an eighth title in 1973, courtesy of Secretariat's Triple Crown, but even the clear emergence of two young pretenders to his crown may not prevent Into Mischief extending his reign in 2026. In the meantime we must qualify this as...

Breeding Digest: Disco Confirms Timing Is Everything When Buying Mares

Sponsored by Pedigrees360. Sorry to do this yet again, but the very fact that the exercise can be repeated every November shows that we're not looking at anything freakish; in other words, that there are valid lessons to learn. Because with daughters of Old Fashioned, Mitole, Big Brown, Ten Sovereigns (Ire) and Outwork among the 10 most valuable mares changing hands at Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland last week, why would anyone trying to seed a breeding program start by spending fortunes on fillies by glamor sires? For most of us, who...

Filly Shisospicy Gives The Boys Heartburn By Wiring Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint

"Tum-ta-tum-tum-TUMS!!" Ordering up some hot sauce with the ring of the bell, Shisospicy (Mitole--Mischief Galore, by Into Mischief) dished out a torrid serving of pace and winged her way to World Championship glory as she downed the GI Prevagen Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint to beat the boys and give them a dose of heartburn. Maybe an appearance by the filly on 'Hot Ones' is in the offing? Shisospicy broke her maiden on first-asking at trainer Jose D'Angelo's Gulfstream base with a 16 1/4-length score last October, which made her a...

BEACH HEIST (f, 2, Omaha Beach--Pearl Heist, by Graydar) ran this group of maiden fillies off their feet in her debut race Friday for Will Walden. The 6-1 shot, drawn wide in this 10-horse field, was pushed from the gate for speed and was able to forge an advantage heading into the far turn. Opening up a sizeable gap back to Cardiff Reef (Omaha Beach) at the quarter pole, Beach Heist looked to put this race away...
