'A Passion for Horses': Sanchez Father and Son Hope for OBS April Redux

Leonardo and Jhonardo Sanchez lived out the pinhooking dream last spring when selling a filly by Tiz the Law--purchased for $70,000 the previous fall--for $1.05 million at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's April 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale. The dream only got sweeter when the filly, Dandona, won the GIII Florida Oaks in the colors of Tagermeen Racing early last month. The father-son team behind Laureles Racing will hope to repeat the success at this year's OBS April sale when they offer a daughter of Tapit (hip 384) through the Kings...

$1.05M OBS 2YO Buy Dandona Prevails in Florida Oaks

Last year, no one could have foreseen Nitrogen (Medaglia d'Oro) would use the GIII Florida Oaks--a turf race for sophomore fillies that offers no GI Kentucky Oaks points--as an unlikely springboard to the 3-year-old filly championship. This year, it was Tagermeen Racing's Dandona (f, 3, Tiz the Law--Tulsa Queen, by Cactus Ridge) who captured the 1 1/16-mile event at Tampa Bay Downs and, if her $1.05-million purchase price when bloodstock agent Mahmud Mouni picked her up from Raul Reyes's Kings Equine consignment at the 2025 OBS Spring sale of 2-year-olds...

FROUTIEN (c, 2, Galilean--It's Timeless, by Mineshaft) was hammered into 1-4 favoritism to improve on a debut third at Saratoga Aug. 15 and did just that, becoming the first winner for his freshman sire (by Uncle Mo) with a workmanlike victory in the Saturday opener at Aqueduct. With Kendrick Carmouche taking over from John Velazquez, at Woodbine for the afternoon to ride that track's three Grade I contests, the $700,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic breezer was ridden...

DANDONA (f, 2, Tiz the Law--Tulsa Queen {SW & GSP-Can, SW-USA, $211,381}, by Cactus Ridge) was a pricey in-training purchase this past spring and she started her career on the tapeta after this maiden was rained off the turf course. Given 2-5 favoritism on the back of two bullets from her last three works, the filly was content to watch the race unfold from the back of the pack as pacesetters rolled through :23.59 and...
