Taylor Made
Everyone recognizes that with the glut of entertainment options today, it's harder and harder to provide experiences that really wow people. In the old days, a trainer would accept a horse from an owner, and hope to never hear from him again, or, to quote an old Charlie Whittingham adage, "Treat owners like mushrooms. Keep 'em in the dark and feed 'em horse manure." Those days are gone, and racing syndicates are now taking the game one step beyond mere communication—not only providing a constant stream of videos, trainer messages,...

Throughout the course of Scott Shepherd's life, his mind had always been plagued by chronic, inescapable fear and doubt. His negative thoughts became a constant cycle of "what ifs," fear of failure and concern over letting those in his life down. That all changed during his first morning meditation session as part of the Stable Recovery program, when he stroked the nose of a mare on layup named Princess Warrior (Midshipman). After this encounter, his mind became peacefully quiet. "I'll never forget when I saw her. It was like all...
Graded winner Miss Macy Sue (Trippi), an accomplished racemare and the dam of 'TDN Rising Star' MGISW Liam's Map (Unbridled's Song) and GSW & GISP Not This Time (Giant's Causeway), has died at the age of 22, Taylor Made announced Friday afternoon. The 2007 winner of the GIII Winning Colors Stakes at Churchill Downs, and runner-up in her title defense a year later, competed in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Monmouth Park in 2007, finishing third when it was still a Listed stakes. Upon retirement, she left...

Early Voting (Gun Runner), the 2022 GI Preakness Stakes winner who has made a remarkable recovery from issues which imperiled his breeding career, has achieved a high conception rate and his first-crop progeny were so well-received at last fall's breeding stock sales that the Early Voting Consortium has donated $30,000 to the Mont Liggins Trust. After getting 120 mares in foal from his first book at Coolmore Stud in 2023, Early Voting was later found to be suffering from anejaculatory syndrome, an inability to ejaculate. The stallion was treated by...
How did we get hooked on this sport? We all have stories about how our love affair developed and blossomed. The TDN will be reaching out to numerous notable people in the industry to get their stories to find out how they got hooked and stayed hooked on the sport. Travis White, Stallion Nomination Manager, Taylor Made I grew up in Louisville, fairly close to Churchill Downs. My earliest connection to racing would have been going to Derby parties in the area. A friend of my father's was a horseplayer,...
It's not that Medallion Racing, a branch of Taylor Made, didn't get off to a good start. It was anything but. A racing partnership whose goal is to gets its partners to experience racing at the highest levels around the world, Taylor Made was delivering on that promise. Out of 250 plus starts, Medallion, at one point had raced five Grade I winners, won 28 graded stakes and had 72 top-three finishes in graded stakes. But what it didn't have was a superstar, the type that could win multiple Grade...
How has your year gone? With the holidays approaching in earnest, it's not uncommon for American families to send a letter to loved ones sharing highlights from their year. If a stallion were to do that, Not This Time's letter might go something like this: Dear Friends and Family, It's been another great year! One son set the North American record on grass for 5 1/2 furlongs and has been billed as "the fastest horse in the world." Another couldn't be beaten at marathons on the dirt. Yet another was...

When Minaret Station (Instilled Regard) jogged back after his stunning upset victory in the GII Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 6, one of the first people to greet him was trainer Will Walden, followed immediately by Tyler Maxwell. The victory was not only poignant in what it represented, with the 2-year-old colt earning an automatic berth to the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, but also in how it brought things full circle for Maxwell who, at one time, was seemingly a lost soul until he was saved by the...
So it turns out that there are last days, too. It was axiomatic with Anthony Manganaro that every day in business should be treated like your first. "If it's the second day, you're falling behind," he would say. Because it was on your first day that you always asked: "What can we do different, what can we do better?" But this questing, vital force was extinguished in August 2023, at 79, and it has meanwhile been the melancholy duty of those he left behind to package up his Turf legacy....
