Letter to the Editor: Aftercare Not Meeting the Need

After months of research and stakeholder engagement for Mike Repole's National Thoroughbred Alliance initiative, I read the Aug. 26 open letter, "When Does a Thoroughbred Earn a Safe Retirement" with interest and, assuredly, shared frustration. The authors have been at the forefront of fighting the slaughter pipeline for years. The most basic finding of my research has been, to little surprise, that the space often referred to as "aftercare,"--which I will call "beyond racing"--is grossly underfunded and underdeveloped. If anyone suggests to you that our industry is doing enough at...

Letter to the Industry: Light Up Racing – When 'There's Nothing We Can Do' Isn't Good Enough

Last week, Kentucky news outlet LEX18 reported the death of Kayseri, a University of Kentucky-bred mare who was shipped to Puerto Rico and ultimately euthanised after prolonged suffering. Her story is devastating - but sadly, not unusual. Kayseri stood in a shipping container for three days at sea, then raced far beyond the point of soundness. No one stepped in to retire her. In January, she was put down due to degenerative joint disease. The treatment of horses in Puerto Rico, throughout and after their racing careers, has been raised...

United's Next Chapter: From Turf Star to Aftercare Ambassador

When it came time for United (Giant's Causeway) to retire from the racetrack, there was never any doubt that he would remain with LNJ Foxwoods, the parents-and-daughter team of Larry, Nanci and Jaime Roth who had campaigned him throughout his four-year career. A seven-time graded stakes winner, the towering chestnut had become the family's all-time leading earner and they were committed to giving him a forever home. What they didn't expect, however, was just how much the competitive gelding would take to a second career. Now flourishing in the show...
